Beijing Like a Local: A Food Tour of Hutongs & Markets

3 days10 May 2026 – 12 MayDifficulty: easyот 12,000 ₽
Маршрут: Beijing

Three days without a single tourist restaurant from a guidebook — only what Beijingers themselves eat: jianbing from a stall by the subway, luzhu in a local eatery without an English sign, the Halal Niujie market and the Sanyuanli market, where the chefs of the city's best restaurants come for ingredients. A route add-on to any trip to Beijing for those who have already seen the Forbidden City and the Great Wall and want to get to know the city through food.

In brief. 3 days, added to the main program in Beijing (no separate accommodation needed — designed as a gastronomic superstructure on top of any route around the city). Current as of August 2026. There is almost no English in the places mentioned — a translator on your smartphone with a camera saves you when reading menus and signs. Payment almost everywhere is only through Alipay/WeChat Pay — cash is not always accepted at street stalls.

The logic of the route: day 1 — the hutongs of the Dongcheng district north of Gulou, day 2 — the Muslim quarter of Niujie in the southwest with a completely different, halal cuisine, day 3 — the Sanyuanli market and the local cafés of Chaoyang for those who want to peek into the professionals' kitchen. No gloss — only places where Beijingers themselves go for breakfast and lunch.

Hutongs of Dongcheng: Jianbing Breakfast, Lukouzhi & Zhaojianmian

🚶 On foot💰 ~2 500 ₽

Breakfast at Beishengqiao Metro

Start with a jianbing (savory crepe with egg and crispy baozi) straight from the vendor – a classic Beijing street food breakfast that locals grab on their way to work.

Luzhu and Zha Jiang Mian

Next, a bowl of luzhu hohsiao (offal and flatbread in a rich broth) at Beishengqiao Luzhu, a legendary local eatery, followed by authentic zha jiang mian (noodles with fermented soybean paste sauce) at Fangzhuanchang No. 69 – that very flavor you rarely find in tourist areas.

Hutongs and Evening Chao Gan

Between meals, wander through the hutongs of Udao’in and Jiaodaokou – narrow alleyways of old construction without a touristy gloss. End the evening with a plate of chao gan (braised tripe with garlic) at Yaoji near Gulou.

Nüzhe: A Halal Quarter and Meat Market

🚕 Taxi💰 ~2 800 ₽

Morning in Niujie

A day in Beijing’s oldest Muslim quarter: braised beef baozi with sesame sauce and fresh rice cakes (niangao) at Baiziji — come between 9–10 am, before the stalls sell out of their best batches.

The Meat Market

A local halal market where neighborhood housewives shop for meat – lamb and beef, spices, pickles. Not a tourist attraction, but a working market in the area that’s worth visiting even without buying anything.

Beijing Huguo Snacks

On the way back — traditional snacks: liudagun (rice balls in soybean flour), wantou, a scattering of other treats with the aroma of the old city. Spicy, filling, authentic and not at all touristy.

Sanyuanli Market & Chaoyang Local Cafes

🚕 Taxi💰 ~2 600 ₽

Sanyuanli Market

A legendary market where chefs from the city's best restaurants come to buy groceries: spices, seafood, exotic fruits, stalls with homemade noodles and dumplings. The best time to visit is in the morning when the freshest produce arrives.

Lunch in Chaoyang’s Back Alleys

A humble Yunnanese or Sichuan eatery tucked away in the back alleys – *gotiao mian* rice noodles, spicy wontons. Establishments without English signage are often the best here.

Douhua for Dessert

The perfect end to the route: coffee from a local roastery or *douhua* (a delicate tofu pudding with syrup) in one of the neighborhood's cafes. A peaceful, delicious, and very “local” day – just how a culinary route should end.
