About this hotel

Echarm Hotel sits in the centre of Guangzhou, just a 2-minute walk from Ximenkou metro station, with the Beijing Road pedestrian street, Renmin Park and Shamian Island all nearby.

Rooms are bright and spotlessly clean, the fittings look fresh and new, soundproofing is excellent with the windows closed, check-in is quick, and breakfast noodles get particular praise.

Who it suits: families and travellers who want a modern room two steps from the historic Beijing Road pedestrian street and Ximenkou metro.

A few honest caveats: you can't pull up right to the entrance by car, since the hotel sits under a flyover, the surroundings are noisy, and rooms are fairly small. Several serious reviews also mention staff pushing hard for good reviews, and rooms not quite matching the photos — worth double-checking the actual room size when booking.

Stayed here 3 days with family. Loved everything. Breakfast was good, plenty to eat. Service too. Recommended. Very close to the metro.

This stay went beyond all expectations, a real oasis of calm mid-trip. Check-in was quick and hassle-free, staff were very polite and responded to requests promptly. The room was bright and spotlessly clean, even the smallest corners were tidy. The mattress and pillows were incredibly comfortable, and soundproofing with the windows shut was excellent, so I slept soundly. Very convenient location, easy to find food and get to sights. All the amenities were functional and useful. Overall, excellent value for money. I've already added this hotel to my list of favourite places to stay in the area and will definitely come back.

The room was very clean and tidy, and the fittings felt new, as if the hotel had just opened. Service at reception was superb. Breakfast noodles were delicious. The hotel is very close to everything in the city centre.

Went to Guangzhou and stayed at the Yishang Hotel (Ximenkou Subway Station) — highly recommend! The location is just perfect — two or three minutes from Exit A of the metro and you're at the hotel. Beijing Road, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Yongqingfang are all nearby, easy to reach by metro or a cheap taxi ride. Downstairs is packed with old-school chang fen and dessert stalls, so if you get hungry in the middle of the night you can just pop out for a bite — a real food-lover's paradise! The room is very comfortable — everything is smart, just say 'Xiaodu' and the curtains close, heated toilet seat, very soft bedding, and great soundproofing so you sleep soundly. Front desk staff are very friendly, and a robot even delivers food to the room, which the kids loved. Breakfast has freshly made noodles, delicious, and eating your fill sets you up for a day of walking. With this location and these facilities, the value for money is excellent. If you come to Guangzhou, stay here, you won't regret it, I'll definitely be back! 😋

What they complained about

I don't usually write negative reviews, because I understand how much they matter for a business and its staff. But given how many times reception staff pushed me to write a review, I feel I need to tell management how they're handling this. Every single time I went to the front desk, I was pressured to leave a review — to the point where I didn't want to talk to anyone at reception at all. Imagine how uncomfortable that is. It wasn't just a request either, I was often asked to do it right there on the spot, and expected to give five stars. It's exactly that pressure that made me feel I had to write an honest review. Every interaction felt aimed at personal gain. To be fair, one staff member did give genuinely excellent service — a blonde woman, around 1.6m tall, wearing glasses, working the evening shift on June 17 and 18. The rest weren't particularly friendly. All they cared about was: 'Could I have 5 minutes of your time to quickly write a review?' As someone who travels a lot, this was the most stressful review-related experience I've had at any hotel. Even at other hotels in the Guangzhou area, we never ran into anything like this. A message to senior management: if a five-star rating matters this much, train your staff properly and treat them the way they should be treated so they can deliver genuine five-star service. You wouldn't need these kinds of tactics if staff were doing it from the heart. Give travellers the right to leave an honest review. On a positive note, the best service I got was from the maintenance staff member who quickly fixed a toilet issue for me. Please treat him well, that level of efficient, excellent service is rare.
