About this hotel

Ibis Styles Hotel sits on Zhongshan Road in Siming District, right on the Zhongshan Road pedestrian street, near Gulangyu Island and the Bagua Building organ museum. Zhenhai Road metro station is a few minutes' walk away.

Guests like being on a quieter stretch of the pedestrian street, close to the metro, a bus stop and the ferry to Gulangyu. Staff (guests often mention specific employees by name) regularly get praised for being responsive, and reception sometimes bumps guests to a better room category for free.

Who it suits: travellers who want to be right on the Zhongshan Road pedestrian street at three-star pricing, under the recognisable international Ibis brand.

On the downside, the building shows its age: some "garden view" rooms actually face a dark inner courtyard, windows in some rooms are fake, and breakfast is average. There are recurring, more serious complaints about hygiene — stained bedding, insect bites, worn-out pillows — from different guests across different periods. Several reviews say the room door needs a firm push to shut. Worth inspecting the room carefully right at check-in.

Great, great, great! Very good!

The hotel is right on Zhongshan Road, but on a quieter stretch of the street. A bonus is being close to Zhenhai Road metro station on Line 1 (Exit 3B). The entrance is small, there's only a shared lift lobby, and reception is on the second floor. 'Garden view' rooms most likely face a shared inner courtyard with several dark rooms. Luckily, reception upgraded us to a street-view room. Anyone sensitive to air quality should keep this in mind when choosing a room. Great value for money, rooms are spacious. The furniture feels a bit sparse, but for the price and service that's easy to overlook. The hotel is close to the ferry pier, just ten minutes on foot, though from 6pm to the next morning it's tourists-only, and during the day it's locals-only. The room matched the hotel photos closely, so I'll attach a few photos of nearby sights instead.

The stay was great, the room was clean and tidy, service was very good. Cleanliness was top-notch, good soundproofing, we slept very soundly. The hotel is conveniently located, with plenty of places to eat right downstairs.

A very clean hotel right on the Zhongshan Road pedestrian street. Step outside and you're already among the local sights, with that distinct port-city atmosphere and loads of cafés and souvenir shops. The hotel is really well located, close to the metro, a bus stop and the pier where the ferry to Gulangyu Island departs. Special thanks to the hotel staff, very responsive and friendly. I especially want to mention the wonderful Xiaoye, who always helped sort out our questions, and the helpful Zhou, who arranged an upgrade for our room. Breakfast is Chinese-style: fruit, noodles, dumplings, steamed buns, steamed vegetables, yoghurt, two kinds of congee, croissants and free coffee 👍 I'd recommend the hotel and would happily come back to beautiful Xiamen myself.

What they complained about

First, we clearly said we wanted to extend our stay, but staff let themselves into the room without notifying us. That points to poor security and a lack of privacy, which honestly doesn't meet basic hotel standards. Second, there were ballpoint pen marks on the sheets. Not sure if they weren't changed or were just poorly washed — cleanliness is questionable either way. Third, after sleeping our whole family was covered in itchy bites, likely from unsanitary conditions. I had over 20 bites, my wife and son had somewhat fewer, around 10. Overall, a very bad experience, wouldn't recommend, and the price isn't cheap either.

Don't trust these good reviews, they're all fake. The hotel is very old and dirty. The pillows are so worn out and misshapen that sleeping on them is like sleeping on a folded rag. There were even bloodstains on the pillows. I couldn't sleep properly all night and woke up with neck pain. You have to slam the room door really hard for it to shut. This room clearly needs a renovation.
