About this hotel

Yungang Meigao Hotel sits on Yingbin Street in Pingcheng District, 7 km from the train station and 17 km from the airport — close to Huayan Monastery, Datong's ancient town, and the Guandi Temple. It is marketed as a five-star property with an on-site restaurant, bar, and parking, and works fine for family trips.

The hotel regularly hosts wedding banquets on weekends — guests looking for a quiet stay should factor this in, since wedding days can get crowded and noisy in the common areas, even though staff try to keep order and help with parking when things get busy.

Who it's for: travelers with flexible expectations about service level, for whom proximity to Huayan Monastery and the old town at a reasonable price matters more than a flawless five-star standard.

Worth knowing: guest reviews suggest the rooms don't really match the five-star label — dated fixtures, street noise, reports of broken air conditioning, and staff not following through on requests (like a quiet room). There was also a complaint about rudeness at the front desk. If a dependable five-star experience is the priority, it's worth looking at a hotel with steadier reviews.

Cleanliness: 4/5. Environment: 4/5. The only downside is that weekend wedding banquets often cause parking problems around midday, but staff keep order and help find spots. Service and amenities: I wouldn't even give 0.5. On the second night the air conditioning stopped working and the room got too hot (it worked fine during the day). I opened the window for a bit, but it still didn't help, so I called staff. They explained there were too many guests and the AC couldn't keep up. Then they listed a bunch of other reasons, like water in the bathroom, and that I'd turned the AC off for a while instead of leaving it running. Are you kidding me? You're here to solve problems, why are you criticizing me? When you arrived, the water had been sitting in the tub for over 5 hours; it was already cold. The AC was on but not working, and I only switched it off briefly. If it had been working, would I have bothered you? It wasn't worth it. I barely slept all night. Luckily the AC started working again just before dawn, and I finally got some sleep. On the plus side, the restaurant on the second floor was very good.

The fixtures are outdated, and it's very noisy from the street. My request for a quiet room was ignored, and hygiene was subpar. The information on Ctrip doesn't match reality at all.

This hotel is nothing like a five-star property. We drove there from Tianjin and ran into three weddings that day. Parking was impossible; it was total chaos. Once we finally parked, we went to the lobby to check in but weren't told where or when breakfast was served. Our room included two breakfasts, but nobody told us the price for an extra child's breakfast, saying we'd have to ask at the front desk. We asked for extra children's toiletries, but they still hadn't arrived by evening, so we had to call again. The next evening the power went out, and we waited a long time for an electrician. He even asked us if we'd heated the water ourselves! Isn't a five-star room supposed to have hot water? This is just terrible. It's unbelievable that Ctrip gave this place a five-star rating in this area.

What they complained about

Front desk staff were rude and sarcastic on check-in day. They gave people odd looks. Cleanliness: the blankets smelled of smoke. Amenities: very outdated; the shower was rusty and moldy. Service: staff were indifferent and cold. The room was very small; overall the experience was extremely poor.
