Yun Mushan B&B (Huangshan Scenic Area Tangkou South Gate Branch) is located on Tanzhuang Street in Tangkou village, at the foot of Huangshan Mountain, and it’s a very practical base for ascending. The guesthouse has twelve rooms, and there’s a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the mountain, where you can see the summit of Tiandu – guests love to photograph the sunrise from there. The owners provide trekking poles and maps, help with routes and tickets, and a smart voice assistant answers questions. The mountain gates are nearby, hot springs and Emerald Valley are within walking distance, and there are cafes and shops in the village.
Tangkou: A Village at the Foot of Huangshan
Huangshan – Yellow Mountain in Anhui province – is celebrated in Chinese painting for its granite peaks and seas of clouds. Tangkou is a village near the southern entrance, where the ascent begins, as well as buses to the cable cars. Nearby are hot springs, Emerald Valley, and Hanshi Cultural Park. From Yixian East Railway Station to the guesthouse it’s about 35 kilometers, roughly 50 minutes by car, and the hotel can arrange airport and train station transfers.
- Southern Gate of Huangshan — entrance to the scenic area.
- Emerald Valley — a gorge with waterfalls.
- Huangshan Hot Springs — relaxation after hiking.
- Tiandu Peak — one of the highest peaks, visible from the roof.
Travel Tip: The weather in the mountains changes quickly – bring a raincoat and warm jacket. The ascent will take a whole day, and if you wish, you can spend the night at the top. Plan your descent in advance; the last cable cars close early. In the evening before ascending, pack your backpack: water, a warm jacket, a raincoat, snacks, and a headlamp. Ask the owners about bus schedules to the cable car stations and how long it will take to ascend on the day you plan to go.
Guesthouse for Mountain Hikers
The guesthouse is small and caters to hikers. It has a library, tea room, card games room, restaurant, luggage storage, and a conference hall. Services include taxi booking, car rentals, bicycle hire, station and airport transfers, as well as ticket and tour bookings. A smart voice assistant in the rooms helps plan routes and manage lighting.

Rooftop Terrace
The panorama of Huangshan and Tian Du peak is visible from the roof. It’s very beautiful here early in the morning, and on clear nights you can see the stars.
Hiking Gear
The hosts provide walking sticks and maps, and offer advice on routes. This is a really useful detail for those new to mountain hiking.
Getting Around Huangshan
Huangshan is usually hiked in one or two days. You can ascend on foot via stone steps or by cable car, and there are several viewing platforms and hotels at the top. The best views are at sunrise and sunset when a sea of clouds drifts over the peaks, but the weather changes quickly, and visibility can drop to just a few meters in fog. Park tickets are purchased online with your passport, and during peak season they’re snapped up days in advance. It’s worth bringing water, light snacks, a raincoat, and warm clothing: it’s noticeably cooler at the summit than in Tangkou. Heavy luggage is best left at the hotel.

Dinner in the Village and Breakfast Before the Ascent
You can have breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant. Anhui cuisine is known for its braised dishes, smoked meats, and bamboo shoot specialties. After your hike, it’s nice to visit a local village cafe where they serve local tea.
Before your hike, bring water, nuts, and rice cakes with you. Food and water are more expensive at the top than at the bottom. Huangshan “maofeng” tea, with its delicate flavor, is best enjoyed in local teahouses.
