Hiroshima and Miyajima are two UNESCO World Heritage sites within one day’s journey. People search for “Hiroshima from Osaka”, “Peace Memorial Park”, “the Genbaku Dome” and “Miyajima floating torii”.
In the centre of the city stands the Genbaku Dome, the only building that survived at the epicentre of the 1945 explosion. Nearby is the Peace Memorial Park with the Memorial to the victims, the Eternal Flame and the Peace Museum: the museum tells the story of the city and the bombing. It usually works by day until 18:00, and the exact hours depend on the season. Allow 2–3 hours for the visit.
Miyajima Island (Itsukushima) is known for the Itsukushima shrine with its red torii gate, which stands in the water and looks “floating” at high tide. At low tide you can walk up to it along the seabed. The island is inhabited by tame deer; you must not feed them food. From Mount Misen there is a view of the Inland Sea, and you can go up by ropeway from Momijidani Park and on foot for the last stretch. In the little streets momiji manju, fried oysters and unagi are sold.
If time remains, in Hiroshima be sure to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, and it is better to leave Hiroshima Castle and the Shukkeien garden for the next day.
