About the castle

Construction of the castle was begun by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, which is why it is called “Hideyoshi’s castle”. The present building was rebuilt in 1931 in reinforced concrete modelled on the Toyotomi era, and inside it has been turned into a museum about Hideyoshi and the history of the castle. It stands on a massive stone base, with white walls and green tiles, and on the eaves are golden tigers and shachi dragon-fish. On the ground floor short films about the castle are shown, on the upper floors there are exhibitions, and from the tower you can look out over the surroundings.

Tickets, hours and the Osaka Amazing Pass

Osaka Castle (Osaka-jo, 大阪城) is the city’s most recognisable sight. The grounds of the castle park are free, and a ticket is needed to enter the main keep (Tenshukaku) with its museum and viewing platform on the top floor. The opening hours depend on the season: usually the keep is open from 9:00 to 17:00, and in spring and autumn, especially at cherry blossom time, it runs longer; entry ends half an hour before closing. Check the exact time when choosing a date. Through the catalogue below you can buy a ticket to the castle or an Osaka Amazing Pass online and pay by Russian card in roubles.

If you are also going to the “Sky Garden” viewing platform of the Umeda Sky Building, there is the Osaka Amazing Pass for both sites and public transport: it pays off when you visit more than three or four paid places a day.

How to get there and not get lost

  • JR. The JR Osaka Loop Line to Osakajo-koen station, right in the park, or Morinomiya on the south side. From Osakajo-koen it is about 15 minutes on foot to the keep through the garden and over the bridge across the moat.
  • Metro. Tanimachi 4-chome station on the Chuo and Tanimachi lines and Osaka Business Park are near the park; about 10 minutes on foot.
  • How to avoid queues. The lifts to the upper floors work quickly, but at weekends a queue for the ticket office and the lift builds up by 10–11 o’clock. Arrive at opening.

What to see besides the keep

The castle is surrounded by a double moat, the Otemon and Sakuramon gates and yagura turrets, some of which date from the Edo era. The Nishinomaru Garden is open in spring and autumn by ticket and is best for cherry blossom in late March and early April. By the gates boats run on the moat, and on the other side of the park is the Hokoku shrine. The museum inside the castle tells about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and shows copies of screens depicting the siege of Osaka.

Restrictions and tips

  • Lift and stairs. There is a lift in the keep, but part of the way from the lower floors goes by stairs. For a pushchair and older people check the conditions at the ticket office in advance.
  • Photos. Photography is not allowed everywhere on the museum floors; on the top viewing platform filming is permitted. Drones over the park are banned, and tripods get in the way of the flow of people.
  • Clothing. The park is large and you will walk a lot, so comfortable shoes are needed. In summer it is hot with little shade, in winter the wind blows from the river.
  • Season. At cherry blossom time the castle is beautiful but very crowded; in the plum grove the blossom comes earlier, in February–March. In autumn the maples in the moat are lovely.
  • What to combine. There are many free places nearby, but the paid keep and garden must be counted separately from the pass. The castle combines well with the Dotonbori canal in the evening.
