Laos is a country where time goes slower: dawn alms-giving to monks in Luang Prabang, the golden temple of Pha That Luang in Vientiane, the turquoise cascades of Kuang Si and the Mekong with long boats gliding along it. A holiday in Laos suits those looking for quiet and authenticity.
An independent trip around Laos is built on two hubs: Luang Prabang (LPQ airport) and Vientiane (VTE). A high-speed train runs between them, and around Luang Prabang it is convenient to get around by tuk-tuk and rented bike.
Why independently
- Your own rhythm. Three or four days in Luang Prabang, a day at the waterfalls, a couple of days in Vientiane.
- Price. Guesthouses and small hotels cost little.
- Quiet. Laos remains calmer than neighboring Thailand and Vietnam.
When is it best to go
The best months are from November to February: dry and not hot. March — May is hotter, and in Luang Prabang there is sometimes a haze from field burning. June — October is the rainy season, and the waterfalls are fullest at this time.
