Sri Lanka overwhelms with the density of impressions: in the morning a climb up the rock fortress of Sigiriya, by day elephants at a waterhole, in the evening a sunset over the ocean. An island the size of Ireland, yet nature changes every couple of hours' travel: from beaches with coconut palms to tea mountains where it is cool even in the heat. That is why a holiday in Sri Lanka combines so easily with excursions.

Organizing an independent trip around Sri Lanka is simpler than it seems: the main places are linked by rail and buses, and short stretches are covered by tuk-tuks and taxis via apps. The road itself often becomes the main impression — the Kandy — Ella train runs through tea plantations and over the Nine Arches Bridge.

Why independently

  • Your own route. You decide where the beach is, where the mountains are and where the ancient cities of the "Cultural Triangle" — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura.
  • Price and flexibility. Trains, buses and hotels booked directly cost less than a tour and don't tie you to a schedule.
  • Depth. Tea villages near Ella, fishing bays of the south, safaris in Yala and Udawalawe — beyond standard excursions.

When is it best to go: the season by coast

The island has two rainy seasons, so a beach holiday is possible almost year-round — you just need to pick the right coast. The west and south (Negombo, Bentota, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle) are best from December to March. The east (Trincomalee, Nilaveli) from April to September. It is more comfortable to go to the mountains near Kandy and Ella from January to April, and whales off Mirissa are watched for from November to April.

The visa for Russians

For entry an electronic ETA permit is arranged — online, before the trip. The conditions and cost have changed, so check the current rules on the Sri Lankan immigration service's official website and don't use intermediaries with a markup.

Where to stay: resorts and hotels

  • West — Negombo, Beruwala, Bentota, Hikkaduwa: closest to the airport, long beaches.
  • South — Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Tangalle: the fort, surf, bays with calm water in winter.
  • Center — Kandy, Ella, Sigiriya, Dambulla: temples, tea, safaris, cooler.
  • East — Trincomalee and Nilaveli: the best sea in summer.

Below are hotels by resort: compare prices, look at guest reviews and book. For a first trip a good option is a week in the south and two or three days in the center of the island; the budget depends on the hotel category and season, and current prices are visible in the hotel cards.
