How to get to Koh Larn on your own

Koh Larn (เกาะล้าน) lies only seven kilometres from Pattaya beach, so it is called the city’s “home” island. Ordinary ferries leave from Bali Hai Pier in the southern part of Pattaya, take about 40 minutes and cost very little; the last return departure leaves in the second half of the day, so check the schedule for the day in advance. Speedboats take 15–20 minutes, but cost noticeably more. On the island itself songthaews, motorbikes and taxis run between the beaches; take a short route and agree the price at once.

Beaches and place names

  • Tawaen. The main beach by the pier, with umbrellas, water attractions and noise.
  • Tien. A narrow beach with clean water, suitable for a calm day and snorkelling; it is the one people go to for a beautiful photo.
  • Samae and Nual. Quieter than Tawaen, and boats often drop people here.
  • Ta Yai. A small beach on the other side of the island, usually emptier.
  • The viewpoint. On the island there is a viewpoint on a hill; the climb up the stairs is worth the effort for the view of the bays.

What to choose: a ferry and independent accommodation are good if you love freedom and are ready to bargain for a scooter. A boat tour with a hotel transfer is convenient because you don’t think about the schedule, and water attractions (jet ski, banana boat, parasailing) are paid separately or included in the ticket depending on the option. The island is best in the morning, before eleven: by day the beaches of Tawaen are noisy.

Limits and tips

  • Things and money. Cash baht are needed for sunbeds, water, massage and a motorbike. There are cash machines on the island, but the queue and the commission are higher than in the city.
  • Scooters. Traffic on the hills is dangerous, and when renting they may keep a deposit in the form of your passport. Don’t leave your passport; it is better to leave a deposit in money, and motorcycle insurance often doesn’t cover an accident without a helmet.
  • Season and sea. From May to October the sea is more often rough, and boats may be rescheduled. The best weather is from November to April.
  • Scammers on the water. Jet-ski renters sometimes issue a bill for imaginary scratches; film the condition of the jet ski before going out and don’t take equipment without a clear price.
  • What to take. Sun cream, a hat, water and a bag for wet things. Take your rubbish away with you.
