How to choose a lesson

Format What you get
S Surf School Bali A lesson with a professional instructor in Kuta in Russian, about 2 hours
27 Surf School A lesson on Kuta Beach, about 2.9 hours
27 Surf Bali Instruction for beginners and intermediate level, about 3 hours

Kuta Beach is the cradle of surfing in Bali: a wide sandy beach with gentle waves where even beginners learn to stand on a board. Lessons are searched for with queries such as “surfing Kuta”, “surf school Bali for beginners”, “surfing with a Russian instructor” and “Kuta Legian surfing”. The beach stretches for several kilometres to Legian and Seminyak, so there is room for everyone.

How to choose a school and the lesson format

A lesson for beginners lasts 2–3 hours: first the instructor explains on the sand how to lie on the board and stand up, then you practise in shallow water. The price includes the board, a rash guard (a swim shirt), a safety leash and the instructor, sometimes photos and video. The S Surf School and 27 Surf School work with groups and individually; there is a lesson with a Russian-speaking instructor who explains the movements in your native language. For the intermediate level a group is picked for higher waves, with advice on paddling technique. See lessons in roubles payable by Russian card in the catalogue below.

When to come and how to avoid the crowd

  • Morning. From 6 to 10 o’clock the wave is smoother, the wind weak and there are fewer people. After noon the sea wind spoils the surface.
  • Season. The best season is April to October (dry), when the wind blows from the land. In December–March the waves are bigger and worse for beginners.
  • Tides. The time of high and low tide changes the shape of the waves; the instructor chooses a zone where you are safe.
  • Transfer. Many schools pick up from hotels in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak; from Canggu it is longer, and the waves there are harder. For the next level see the article surfing lessons in Bali.

What you need to know about the place

On Kuta Beach lifeguards in red and yellow uniforms work, and flags mark safe swimming zones. Along the beach drinks, massage, and board and umbrella rental are sold; it is better to find out the prices before you start. Since the shore is sandy, coral does not cut your feet and the bottom is soft. This matters for children and for those who fear injury.

How to spend the first lesson

The first half hour goes on dry land: the instructor will show the position on the board, the paddling technique and how to stand up in two movements. Then you go into the water waist-deep, where you catch foamy waves rather than open surf. By the end of the session most people stand up for at least a few seconds. Do not be upset if not everything works from the first wave: at Kuta lessons last two to three hours, and a second day gives noticeable progress. Plan cream and rest in the shade after the lesson, because even in cloudy weather shoulders burn quickly. If you want to repeat it, agree with the school on a second session at the same hour, when you already know the entry and exit from the water.
