Pura Tanah Lot (“Land in the Sea”) is a Hindu sea temple on a rock fifty metres from the shore at Beraban, on the Tabanan coast. It is one of the most recognisable places in Bali, which is why it is searched for with queries such as “Tanah Lot tickets”, “Tanah Lot sunset”, “how to get there from Canggu” and “Tanah Lot opening hours”.

Hours, tickets and how to avoid queues

The complex is open daily from 6:00 to 19:00. Entry is paid at the ticket office, and for online tickets as part of a tour or as a separate order, in roubles payable by Russian card, see the catalogue below. The biggest crowd comes an hour before sunset, from 16:30 to 18:30; on the approach to the temple there is a row of shops, and the viewing platform is packed. The best hours for a calm visit are the morning from 7 to 9 or the very opening. At noon it is bright but hot.

How to get there on your own

  • From Canggu. About 11–13 km, 30–40 minutes by scooter or taxi; longer at the peak.
  • From Seminyak and Kuta. 45–60 minutes. From Ubud about 1.5 hours, from Uluwatu 1.5–2 hours.
  • Organised. A tour with a driver is convenient in that you are brought for the sunset and returned to the hotel, while parking at the temple is paid.

What to see and how not to get the time wrong

The main Tanah Lot temple stands on a rock surrounded by water at high tide, and at low tide you can walk to the base over sand and stones. Only worshippers go inside; tourists have access to the viewing platform and the base, where there are holy water and holy snakes in a cave. Along the embankment stand smaller temples: Pura Enjung Galuh. Nearby is the Batu Bolong temple with an arch in the rock, popular with photographers. In season dance performances are sometimes held in the evening.

Sunset is usually around 18:00–18:30, but it is worth arriving by 16:30 with a margin: parking takes long, and the best places are already taken. Canggu and its cafes are described in the article fashionable cafes in Canggu.

How to plan the evening

The best scenario: leave Canggu or Seminyak around 15:00, park by 16:00–16:30 and stroll along the embankment before sitting down at the viewpoint. The sunset is watched from the hill to the left of the temple or from a cafe terrace over the cliff: from there the temple’s silhouette and the line of the surf are visible. If you want fewer people, come in the morning: the light is soft, the viewpoint is empty, and coffee at the cafe over the cliff comes without a queue. After sunset the road back is jammed for about an hour, so do not schedule dinner right after the temple, leave a time reserve. Many combine Tanah Lot with the Jatiluwih rice terraces and the Ubud palace in one day, but then you will manage only if you leave before 8 am.

Restrictions and tips

  • Dress code. A sarong and a sash are needed for the temple zone, and are given out at the entrance; knees and shoulders must be covered. It is not customary for women to enter the temple zone during menstruation.
  • High tide. At high tide you cannot walk to the base of the temple, as the waves are strong. Find out the low-tide time before the trip.
  • What is not allowed. Do not climb the rocks or into the cave with snakes, and do not use a drone. Photos with the temple are allowed only from the embankment.
  • Passport. Not needed at the entrance.
  • Season. Best from April to October, when sunsets are clearer. In the rainy season the sunset is often hidden by clouds.
  • Combining. You cannot fit Tanah Lot and Uluwatu into one sunset: they are at opposite ends of the island. Choose one.
