How to choose a tour

Uluwatu is the southern tip of the island of Bali on the Bukit peninsula. Here stands the temple Pura Luhur Uluwatu on a cliff above the ocean, and in the evening the Kecak dance is held. The area is searched for with queries such as “Uluwatu sunset”, “Kecak tickets”, “GWK park Bali”, “Padang Padang” and “Uluwatu temple monkeys”. This route is called the classic of Bali, because in one evening you see a temple, a sunset and a performance.

Hours, tickets and how to avoid queues

The Luhur temple is open to tourists in daylight; entry is paid at the ticket office, and a sarong is provided free. The Kecak performance in the amphitheatre by the temple usually starts around 18:00 and lasts about an hour, and its ticket is paid separately. Arrive an hour early to take seats with a view of the sunset: after 17:30 there are almost no free seats in the best rows. How to get there on your own

• From Kuta and the airport. About 45 minutes, from Seminyak 1–1.5 hours, from Ubud up to two hours.
• Taxis and Grab. Online taxis back from Uluwatu are often restricted by local drivers, so it is more reliable to arrange a driver for the evening in advance or take a tour with a transfer.
• The return. After Kecak hundreds of people leave at once, and the road is jammed for an hour to an hour and a half. Leave earlier or sit in a cafe on the cliff.

What is where: the temple, GWK and the beaches

The Luhur temple is one of the six main sanctuaries of Bali; only worshippers go inside, and the path along the precipice gives the best views. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) cultural park is not far from Jimbaran: its main sight is the statue of the god Vishnu on the bird Garuda, about 120 metres tall together with the pedestal, completed in 2018. The park is open from 9:00 to 21:00 and suits both a daytime walk and the evening shows. The beaches of Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban and Dreamland are half an hour away. After sunset many people go for a seafood dinner in Jimbaran.

Restrictions and tips

• Monkeys. Macaques live in the temple and steal glasses, hats, phones and bags. Close your backpack, put away jewellery and do not wave food about.
• Dress code. A sarong and a sash are needed, with knees and shoulders covered. It is not customary for women to enter the temple during menstruation.
• Safety. Do not go to the edge of the cliff where there is no barrier: it drops 70 metres.
• Passport. Not needed at the entrance.
• Drones. Banned over the temple without permission.
• Season. The best sunsets are from April to October. In the rainy season the sunset is often in cloud.
• If you are short of time. Take a 3.5-hour tour; for a full day choose the combination of Uluwatu, the beaches and dinner in Jimbaran.
