K-House Hotel stands on the western stretch of Huanshi Road, 147, in the Yuexiu district, and it is about a minute’s walk from the provincial bus station. Close by are several of Guangzhou’s themes at once: the railway station, the metro, the huge Baima wholesale garment market and the Hongmian shopping centre. It is a hotel for those who came not to admire the city but to get things done: buy a batch of clothes, change to a train, get to another city by bus. There are 112 rooms here, and their sizes are quite adult, from twenty-two to thirty metres, with a king-size bed or two beds. On the seventh floor there is a laundry, downstairs a restaurant, and in the rooms, according to guests, music plays from a ceiling speaker with Bluetooth. Food delivery from places around is sometimes brought by a robot that stops at the door of the room. The hotel is convenient as a base for one or two nights for buyers and transit passengers, while for a leisurely holiday in Guangzhou it is better to choose an area nearer the river.

Huanshi Road: the station, buses and wholesale rows

This area of Guangzhou is organised entirely around movement. North of the hotel stands the main railway station with trains to Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Beijing, the bus station is next to it, and the metro exits right onto the square. On foot from here you can reach the Baima wholesale garment markets, the Hongmian trading complex and the Yuehuicheng shopping centre. In the opposite direction, a couple of blocks away, begin the green avenues of Yuexiu Park with its lake and a hill that residents climb for morning exercise. The area is noisy, dense and business-like: by day crowds with trolleys, in the evening bright signs and eateries, and at night, as in any station area, it is better not to relax and to watch your things.

  • The Baima market — wholesale clothing trade, open from the morning.
  • Guangzhou station — trains to Hong Kong and the north of the country.
  • Yuexiu Park — a green respite on foot from the hotel.
  • The bus station — services around Guangdong.

Tip for travellers: Wholesale markets come alive early and quieten towards evening, so plan shopping for the morning and leave bags of goods at the hotel. From May to September it is hot and humid by day, and after the market a rest in an air-conditioned room is especially pleasant. Night walks around the station should not be stretched until morning.

A laundry, a gym and robots on the floors

The hotel is made for practical guests: nothing superfluous, but everything that will come in handy on the road. On the seventh floor is a laundry with a washing machine and dryer, on the floor below a small gym with basic equipment, and downstairs a restaurant and lobby bar. There is a lift, a ventilation system, a dryer and a garment steamer, places to work and left luggage. Electronic document reading speeds up registration, and express check-in helps after a train. The conference hall and the multifunctional hall are designed for group meetings.

Breakfast in the restaurant and dinner around the station

Guests say the breakfast in the hotel restaurant is rich and varied: the buffet has porridges, dumplings and the familiar eggs. This is convenient when in the morning you need to catch a train or get to the market and have no time to look for a café.

In the evening the choice around is huge. Guangzhou is considered the capital of Cantonese cuisine, so look for dim sum, cheung fun rice rolls, wonton soup and roast goose. If you want a snack right in your room, order delivery: a robot will bring it to the door.
