About this hotel

Waiting Century Hotel is about a kilometer from Shanghai Railway Station, right by the Shanghai Railway Station metro stop — a convenient pick if you're arriving or leaving by train, or just need a short stopover between connections. From here it's an easy trip to the Bund and the M50 art district.

It's a four-star property with comfortable rooms and daily restocked water and drinks. Reviewers consistently describe the front-desk staff as polite and patient. On site there's a restaurant, bar, gym and parking.

Who it's for: travelers in transit with an early-morning or late-night train or flight, and anyone after a budget option next to one of Shanghai's major transport hubs.

The main complaint that comes up in almost every review is thin soundproofing — you can hear neighbors and conversations in the hallway, and earplugs have to be requested separately at the front desk. There are also complaints about a musty smell and some rooms not matching the photos on the site — it's worth inspecting the room at check-in and asking for a swap if needed.

Located right by Shanghai Railway Station, the metro is very close, so it's easy to get to the Bund. Very quiet at night. The front-desk agent, Xiao Wu, was very polite, professional and patient, and offered us coffee and water. A great choice for a trip.

Convenient location. Cleaned every day. The room got two fresh bottles of water, Sprite and Pepsi restocked daily.

A very dirty hotel. The photos on the hotel's profile are very different from reality. Small windows, musty smell. During our whole stay (9 days) the floors were never mopped and the dust was never wiped. At check-in they said they'd upgraded our room for free and put us in a room with a broken sink and a 30x60cm window, not to mention other guests' hair clumps on the floor. They swapped the room without any issue, but it wasn't much better. The location is very convenient, right by the metro, the Bund, and the Jade Buddha Temple. Breakfast was decent, with a good selection. Staff were friendly. But how dirty everything was outweighed all of that.

The hotel is well located: very close to Shanghai railway station and not far from downtown, which is convenient for sightseeing. Front desk service was also very attentive. In-room amenities are good, there's satellite TV, and the room is clean. The only downside is the AI assistant in the room isn't great, and the toilet's sensor is overly sensitive.

What they complained about

The room had absolutely no soundproofing — it felt like sleeping right in the hallway. I could clearly hear a neighbor opening and closing their door. Conversations in the corridor in the middle of the night were also clearly audible, and there were no earplugs in the room — you had to ask for them at the front desk. In some rooms, delivery food couldn't be brought up by the robot, so couriers wandered in wherever they wanted. Courier calls in the middle of the night didn't help either. All this noise really got in the way of resting. The bathroom was very small — one person could barely turn around in the shower. The toilet and shower shared one door. On top of that, the fully "smart" room lighting would switch off in the middle of the night because it couldn't detect a sleeping person's movement. There were windows, but very small ones, surrounded by walls, so opening them only showed the walls of neighboring buildings. The gap between buildings was so narrow the windows were basically useless. The fittings didn't look new either.
