What the “four islands” include

The classic route (4 Islands) combines the islands of Koh Poda, Chicken Island (Koh Kai, named for a rock shaped like a rooster), Tup Island and Mor Island. At low tide a sandbar appears between Tup, Mor and Chicken, and you can walk across it, so the start time matters: ask when the tide comes in. Most programmes add Railay beach, Phra Nang Cave Beach with its cave, and a narrow lagoon.

How to get there and choose a format

Boats leave from the piers at Ao Nang and Railay. From Ao Nang you can reach Railay by longtail in 15 minutes, and the other islands are closer by speedboat. The format determines everything: a longtail is slower but closer to the water, a speedboat is faster, and a sailing boat is prettier and costs more. Short tours take 2.5–4.5 hours, extended ones with Railay about 5.5 hours, and the option with Phi Phi from Krabi, Maya Bay and Bamboo Island stretches to 6.8 hours.

• Railay beach. East Railay is not suitable for swimming, while West Railay is good for photos; the sunset here is the most beautiful.
• Mirror Lake. This is a separate short 2.5-hour tour: kayaking, to which you can add elephants or quad bikes.
• With Phi Phi. If you want Phi Phi specifically from Krabi, take a ready-made tour, and Krabi–Phi Phi ferries are collected on the transfers page.

Railay and Phra Nang in more detail

The Railay peninsula cannot be reached by road, only by boat, so it is calm and beautiful. Phra Nang beach, with its limestone cliff and cave, is considered one of the most beautiful in Thailand, and the turquoise water here is clear. West Railay is good for sunset, East Railay for the boat piers. Mirror Lake with kayaking is part of a separate short tour.

A short four-island tour suits you if you simply want to swim and take a photo on the sandbar. The extended route with Railay and Phi Phi is better when you have a whole day and no fear of seasickness.

Restrictions and tips

• Park fee. The park entrance fee is often paid separately; check it on the ticket.
• Sunscreen. Mineral only: other kinds are banned in the marine parks.
• Phra Nang cave. It is a shrine with offerings; behave respectfully and do not photograph it in an explicit way.
• High and low tide. The sandbar is visible only at low tide; in the rainy season the waves can be high, and tours are sometimes cancelled.
• Footwear. For landing on the beach, bring sandals you do not mind getting wet and a waterproof case.
• Season. Best from November to April; from May to October the sea is rough.
