What the Hong Islands are and how to get there

The Hong Islands (Ko Hong, เกาะห้อง) are a group of limestone islets north of Ao Nang. The Thai “hong” means “room”: hidden inside the rocks are round lagoons with emerald water, which you enter by kayak or small boat. The main points are Hong Lagoon, Lao Lading beach, Pakbia and the viewpoint on Ko Hong. The islands are part of Than Bok Khorani National Park.

• Where to leave from. Tours start from the piers of Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara and Klong Muang; it is 20–40 minutes to the islands by speedboat or half an hour to an hour by longtail.
• Which format. A speedboat is faster and roomier, a longtail quieter and closer to the water. Tours last 4–6 hours.
• Sunrise or sunset. On a sunrise tour there are fewer people and the light is soft, but you get up at 5 a.m. The sunset option is easier to organise, but many boats come to the lagoon.
• Park fee. It is paid separately if it is not included in the price. Check on the ticket.
• On your own. You can arrange a boatman at Ao Nang pier, but it is better to fix the price in advance, and in the evening boats run rarely.

What to do on the islands

The main item of the programme is Hong Lagoon: a round bay among sheer rocks, which you enter by kayak or small boat through a narrow passage. The water in it is calm and clear, so it is good for swimming with a mask. After that tours stop at Lao Lading beach and at Pakbia, where snorkelling is right off the shore, and on Ko Hong itself you can climb to a small viewpoint above the lagoons.

Restrictions and tips

• Sunscreen. In marine parks creams with filters harmful to corals are banned; take a mineral one.
• Season. The best weather is from November to April. From May to October the sea is rough, boats run less often and tours are cancelled.
• Passport. Bring a document or a photo for registration in the park.
• Seasickness. A speedboat rocks; sit nearer the stern.
• What to bring. A swimsuit, a waterproof case, flip-flops, a thin scarf. Do not touch the corals and do not leave litter. Drones are banned.
