The Hon Thom Cable Car (Sun World Hon Thom) is one of the longest in the world: a three-rope line of about 7.9 kilometres stretching from An Thoi port in the south of Phu Quoc to Hon Thom island. Opening hours, tickets and how to avoid queues

The cable car runs in two windows: roughly 9:30 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, with a break at lunchtime. The ride takes about 15 minutes, and the cabins fly over several islets and golden beaches. If you arrive during the break, you will wait two hours, so build your schedule around the window. Queues grow in the last hour before the lunch break and right after the evening window opens. It pays to be at the station 20–30 minutes before the start: then you will get into the first cabins. At weekends the wait is longer, on weekdays there are fewer people.

How to get there on your own

• From Duong Dong. About 25–30 km along the coast road, 40–50 minutes by taxi or Grab.
• From the airport. About 20 km, roughly 35–40 minutes.
• From the Long Beach or Ong Lang resorts. 40–60 minutes; a transfer can be arranged at your hotel.
• Organised. A tour with a transfer works out better for those who do not want to puzzle over the timetable.

How to build a day around the cable car

The most convenient scenario is to leave the hotel by 8:30, be at An Thoi station by 9:30, go up in the first cabins and spend the whole morning on Hon Thom island: the beach, the water park, a light lunch. By 11:30 return to the mainland before the cable car goes on its break. After lunch it runs until 17:00, and you can go to Sunset Town for the sunset: the embankment there is lit up towards evening, and the Kiss Bridge fills with photographers. With children it makes sense to keep only one of the two cable car sessions for the island and leave the other for the descent after lunch, when it is less hot. For couples it is better to choose the sunset window and plan the return in advance: it takes longer to hail a taxi from An Thoi in the evening.

The cable car looks good in photographs, but the real benefit matters more: it saves about an hour that a boat to the island would take, and shows the An Thoi archipelago from above. That is why, for a first acquaintance with the south of Phu Quoc, people take it together with a sea tour rather than instead of one.

Restrictions and tips

• Wind and storms. In strong wind and thunderstorms the cable car is stopped. In the rainy season (May to October) check the forecast and keep a spare day.
• Clothing. Light clothes, a hat and sunscreen. On the island you need a swimsuit, and at the pier comfortable shoes.
• Passport. Bring an ID document for booking the tour; at the station it is usually not asked for.
• Drones. Banned over the stations and cables.
• Best time. November to April: less rain and a calm sea. At sunset Sunset Town is crowded, so arrive an hour early.
• Plan for the break. The cable car does not run at lunchtime, so do not schedule connections and dinners for 12:00.
