Ninh Binh is called “the dry Ha Long”: the same limestone rocks, only they rise from rice fields and canals rather than from the sea. The Trang An complex is a UNESCO site, and people come here with queries such as “Ninh Binh from Hanoi in one day”, “Trang An or Tam Coc”, “Mua Cave”, “Bai Dinh” and “Hoa Lu”. We explain how not to spend the day in the crowd.

How to get there from Hanoi and how long the trip takes

  • A group tour. Departure around 7:30–8:00, return by 17–19 hours. The tour with a Russian guide takes about 13 hours and fits in more points, while the 7.5-hour version is the usual choice for those in a hurry.
  • By train. It is about 2–2.5 hours from Hanoi station to Ninh Binh station. From there a taxi or scooter to Trang An and Tam Coc, about 10–25 minutes.
  • By limousine bus. Minibuses leave from the Old Quarter and take about 2 hours. It is a convenient alternative to the train.

What is on the route: Trang An, Tam Coc, Mua Cave, Bai Dinh

Trang An is a boat ride through underground channels and lakes in rowing boats; the rower holds the oars and you sit four to a boat. There are several routes, the trip takes 2–3 hours, and in the middle of the day you will have to wait to board. Tam Coc is famous for its three caves and the rowers who work with their feet; the boat ride lasts about two hours. At both places it is better to go at opening.

Mua Cave (Hang Múa) is not so much a cave as a staircase of almost five hundred steps to the top of a mountain with a dragon monument and a view of the bends of the Ngo Dong River. The climb takes 20–30 minutes, and by noon the staircase is crushed. Bai Dinh pagoda is Vietnam’s largest Buddhist complex with long galleries of statues, and Hoa Lu is the 10th-century capital of Vietnam with ancient temples. The incense and hat villages near Hanoi suit those who want half a day and do not want to travel so far.

Restrictions and tips

  • Passport. Needed for booking the tour and the train; it is usually not asked for at the Trang An and Tam Coc entrances.
  • Clothing. At Bai Dinh shoulders and knees must be covered. On the boats bring cream, a hat and water, and on the Mua Cave staircase shoes with a non-slip sole.
  • Tips for the rowers. In Tam Coc the rowers often ask for tips and push souvenirs. Decide in advance how much you are ready to give, and politely decline the rest.
  • Season. The rice turns golden in May–June and September–October; in winter it is cool and often overcast, but there are fewer people. On Sundays and holidays the boat queues are longer.
  • Drones. Flying over the complex without permission is banned.
  • Combining with Ha Long. You cannot fit both places into one day: choose one or plan an overnight stay.
