How to choose a tour

How to choose a format: a ship, a boat or a small group

A large ship is the most affordable format: two or three snorkelling stops, fishing, water slides on board and lunch over 5–5.5 hours. A half-day speedboat (3.8 hours) reaches the distant reefs faster and suits those who want to see more places. A VIP small group of 3.6 hours gives calm snorkelling and the guide’s attention. The one-day boat of 7.5 hours is run in Chinese or English. Where the boats leave from and what the road costs

• The pier. The main services start from An Thoi port in the south of the island; the cable car to Hon Thom leaves from there too.
• Transfer. From Duong Dong it is about 40–50 minutes along the coast road; organised tours include a hotel transfer.
• Time. Morning departures around 8:00–9:00, return by 14–16 hours; evening shows end late.

What to see and do on the water

A typical programme includes the islands of Hon Thom, Hon Mong Tay, Hon Gam Ghi and several reefs where the water is clear and you can see corals and fish through a mask. On board they make a barbecue or lunch and organise fishing, and the water slides on board are especially liked by children. The stops depend on the weather, and the captain may change the route.

Restrictions and tips

• Season. The best sea is from November to April. From May to October there are storms, underwater visibility is worse and services are cancelled.
• What to wear. A swimsuit, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, a waterproof case. The cream must be reef-safe.
• Seasickness. A boat rocks more than a large ship; if you tolerate rocking badly, choose the ship.
• Drones. Banned without permission.
• Passport. Bring a copy: it may be checked at the pier, and for the “Kiss of the Sea” show the details are needed when booking.
• If you are short of time. Take the half-day boat; for the evening, the “Kiss of the Sea” show.
