Sunrise on Mount Batur in Bali: how the night climb goes, how much it costs, whether a guide is required, what to do about the monkeys at the summit and when it is best to go.
An alarm at one in the morning, cold air on the doorstep of the villa, a minibus in pitch darkness, and then two hours of climbing a stony trail by the light of a headlamp — and here you are on the edge of the crater, while the sky in the east slowly turns pink, orange and gold. Below lies Lake Batur, on the horizon in clear weather Mount Agung is visible, and warm steam rises from cracks in the rock beside you. The sunrise on Batur is the most popular trek in Bali, and although you will not be alone (hundreds of people gather at the summit at this time), it is still one of the best mornings of the trip.

What kind of volcano it is
Batur is an active volcano in the Kintamani area in the north-east of the island. It sits at the centre of two concentric calderas: a huge caldera 10 by 13 kilometres across was formed by a catastrophic eruption about 30,000 years ago, and inside it lie Lake Batur and the cone of the volcano itself. This is not a decorative mountain but a living volcano: at the summit warm steam comes from cracks, and local guides bake eggs and bananas on it for breakfast.
How the trek goes
A typical scenario looks like this: you are picked up from your hotel in Ubud (usually between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m.), driven to Kintamani, meet the guide and begin the climb around 3–4 a.m. The standard route leads from the base village at an altitude of about 1,300 metres to the crater rim at 1,717 metres — roughly 400 metres of elevation gain in 2 hours. The trail is stony and in places steep, but requires no technical preparation: older children and elderly people in normal physical shape cope with it. Guides are mandatory: under local rules you won’t be let past the base without them, even if you had planned to go on your own.
Monkeys and what to bring
At the summit you will be met by troops of Balinese macaques that are used to tourists and hunt for their food. The monkeys are not aggressive but may jump on your shoulders if they see fruit or biscuits in your hands, so don’t keep food in view and don’t wave it around. Take a warm jacket — it is cold at the summit at dawn — a headlamp (guides sometimes provide one), closed shoes with a ribbed sole, water and a small reserve of cash for tips and small purchases.
How much it costs
Prices depend strongly on the format: for an ordinary group sunrise trek with transfer and breakfast they ask 300–850 thousand rupiah (roughly 20–55 dollars). Sunrise jeep tours up the slope cost more — 800 thousand – 1.2 million rupiah depending on the size of the group and what is included. Some budget offers do not include the trek entrance fee — 100–150 thousand rupiah — so clarify what the price includes in advance and don’t buy the “cheapest option” from street sellers.
When to go
The best season is the dry one, May to September: the sky is more often clear, the trail dry and reliable. In the rainy season the sunrise is often hidden by clouds and the trail becomes slippery; in these months it is worth allowing a spare day in case of cancellation. The morning at the summit is cold at any time of year, so clothing in layers matters more than it seems from the heat below.
Practical tips
To avoid standing in the crowd at the most popular spot, ask your guide to pick a less crowded viewpoint — some offer alternative routes. Don’t take anything unnecessary: the backpack should be light. It is better to drink water in small sips, and after the climb to have a bite but not overeat. If you slept badly in the night, don’t be a hero: stop and rest, there is no rush.
