Bali's two seasons, the best months for surfing and the rice terraces, and when it is cheaper and greener.

Bali has just two seasons, and the difference is mostly about rain, not temperature — it is warm all year.

The dry season (April–October)

The best time: sunny, with lower humidity, ideal for beaches, temples and rice terraces. The peak is July–August (pricier and more crowded). Excellent shoulder months are May, June and September.

The wet season (November–March)

Rains are usually short and heavy, more often in the second half of the day; between them there is sun. It is green, cheaper, with fewer tourists. The downside is humidity, and the sea is murkier in places.

Bottom line: for a first trip take May–June or September — dry and without the crowds.

Surf and Nyepi — factor them into your planning

  • For surfers: in the dry season the west coast works (Uluwatu, Canggu) — the wind blows “into the wave”; in the wet season the east of the island is better (Sanur, Nusa Dua).
  • Once a year (usually in March) Bali observes Nyepi, the Day of Silence: for 24 hours absolutely nothing works, including the airport. Check the date so that you do not time your arrival or departure for it.
