Nusa Lembongan is a calm island south-east of Bali, which tourists search for with queries such as “Lembongan excursion”, “Dream Beach”, “Devil’s Tear”, “Mushroom Bay” and “the Yellow Bridge”. It is quieter and more compact than neighbouring Nusa Penida: here there are bays, beach clubs, mangroves and seaweed farms, rather than cliffs and crowds.

How to get there and how much a day costs

Boats go from Sanur to the village of Jungutbatu or to Mushroom Bay and take about 30–45 minutes. Morning services leave at 8:00–9:00, and the return ones end at about 16–17 hours. You can buy a boat ticket in advance on the page transfers and boats, and see tours with a transfer and lunch at a beach club in roubles payable by Russian card in the catalogue below. The most popular services sell out in high season several days ahead, so book in advance.

What to see: Dream Beach, Devil’s Tear, Mushroom Bay

  • Dream Beach. White sand and heavy surf; swimming is possible only at the edge. Viewpoints and beach clubs are nearby.
  • Devil’s Tear. A rocky headland where the waves hit the wall and shoot up in a fountain; stay behind the barrier, especially at high tide.
  • Mushroom Bay. A calm bay for swimming and snorkelling, with cafes and water sports.
  • The Yellow Bridge and Nusa Ceningan. A pedestrian bridge between two islands, from where it is closest to the Blue Lagoon, where people jump off the cliff.
  • The mangrove forest and seaweed farms. By boat along the channel; a good place at sunset.

If you choose a two-island tour, on Penida you will have time to see a couple of points, and on Lembongan you will relax on the beach. More about the neighbouring island is in the article a guide to Nusa Penida and on the page Nusa Penida from Bali.

The island is small, and you can get around it by scooter, but beginners should take a driver or an electric buggy: the roads are narrow, with sand in places.

How to plan a day on the island

A calm scenario: the boat at about 8:30, breakfast in Jungutbatu, then by electric buggy or with a driver to Devil’s Tear and Dream Beach, lunch at a beach club in Mushroom Bay and snorkelling after midday. At sunset stroll along the mangrove channel or sit on Jungutbatu beach. Leave for the last boat at least 30 minutes before departure: the pier is packed and boarding goes with a queue. If you stay overnight, in the morning the island is quite empty, and you can enter the water without crowds.

Restrictions and tips

  • Safety on the water. At Dream Beach and Devil’s Tear there is a strong current and waves; it is better to swim in Mushroom Bay. Snorkel only in a life jacket and with a guide.
  • Passport. Bring the original or a copy: details are checked on the boat.
  • Clothing and shoes. A swimsuit, a hat, cream, shoes for the rocks. Keep your phone in a case.
  • Season. April to October, when the sea is calmer. In the rainy season services are often cancelled, and the crossing rocks.
  • Drones. Banned without permission.
  • Cliff jumping. At the Blue Lagoon people jump at their own risk; at high tide and in wind it is better to refrain.
