Nusa Penida is a rocky island half an hour’s sail from Sanur, and Bali’s main trip for views. It is searched for with queries such as “Nusa Penida excursion”, “Kelingking”, “Broken Beach”, “Angel’s Billabong” and “Diamond Beach”. The island attracts with cliffs plunging into the ocean, white sand and bright reefs.

How to get there and what a tour includes

Speedboats leave from Sanur, Padang Bai and Serangan; the crossing takes about 30–45 minutes, and the service arrives at the Toya Pakeh, Buyuk or Banjar Nyuh piers. A day excursion includes the transfer, the boat, lunch and a driver around the island, while on cheaper tours the entrance fees have to be paid on site. See boat tickets and tours in roubles payable by Russian card in the catalogue below, and the boat timetable on the page transfers and boats.

Departure from Sanur is around 7:00–8:00, with a return by 17–18 hours. The roads on the island are steep and rough, so most people take a tour with a driver: beginners should not go there on a scooter. Detailed routes are in the articles Nusa Penida in one day and a guide to Nusa Penida.

The west and the east: what to choose

  • West. Kelingking (“the T-Rex”) is a cliff and the island’s most famous photograph; Broken Beach (Pasih Uug), an arch in the rock; Angel’s Billabong, a natural pool; Crystal Bay, a beach for swimming and snorkelling.
  • East. Diamond Beach with its white staircase, Atuh, the “Thousand Islands” viewpoint and Rumah Pohon (the Tree House). The roads are worse, but there are fewer people.
  • Manta Bay. A boat tour to the mantas is available almost all year round; visibility depends on the currents.

Queues and crowds: at Kelingking there is a crush between 10 and 14 hours, so start in the west and arrive at opening.

Restrictions and tips

  • Safety. Do not swim at Angel’s Billabong and at Broken Beach at high tide: the waves throw people onto the rocks. Do not go past the barriers on the cliffs.
  • The descent to Kelingking beach. Steep and dangerous, about an hour up and down; not suitable for children and the elderly. The viewing platform is enough for a look.
  • Passport. Bring the original or a copy: details are checked on the boat.
  • Clothing and shoes. Trainers or trekking sandals, a hat, cream, a windbreaker. There is spray on the boat, so keep your phone in a case.
  • Season. Best from April to October, when the sea is calm. In the rainy season services are cancelled because of waves, and the crossing is unpleasant.
  • Drones. Banned without permission, especially over temples.
