The Hainan branch of Hospital 301 in Sanya: Western diagnostics and surgery at a state institution with fixed prices in Haitang Bay — address, pros and cons.

In our guide to Hainan’s sanatoriums we have already covered Sanya’s traditional Chinese medicine clinics. But the island also has a fundamentally different format — a branch of China’s largest military hospital, Hospital 301, in Haitang Bay. People come here not for acupuncture and herbal baths but for Western diagnostics and treatment at a state institution with fixed prices — together with a beach holiday in one of Sanya’s most touristy areas.

Important warning. This material is for reference and does not replace a consultation with your own doctor. For planned treatment and operations, make the decision together with a doctor in Russia, having assessed the indications, contraindications and advisability of the trip.

What kind of hospital it is

The Hainan branch of Hospital 301 is the first unit of the Beijing head hospital outside the capital in its whole history, created with a view to developing Hainan as an international medical destination. It is a Grade “A” hospital, with 49 clinical and medical-technical departments, 25 nursing stations and modern equipment — including Da Vinci surgical robots and PET-CT. The leading areas are oncology, internal medicine, hepatology and cardiovascular surgery, as well as separate departments of cosmetology and plastic surgery and treatment of spine problems.

Address: No. 80 Jianglin Road, Haitang District, Sanya (Haitang Bay, next to the Gloria Haitang Bay hotel).

How it works in practice

As a state institution, the hospital works from a fixed price list — which distinguishes it from the many private clinics in Sanya oriented toward the tourist flow, where the price of treatment can vary greatly depending on the conversation with the administrator. Patients who compared the conditions with treatment in Israel and Germany note comparable quality of diagnostics at a noticeably lower price.

The hospital has its own hotel for patients (about 588 ¥ per night), and nearby, in Haitang Bay, there is a whole range of international-chain hotels: Gloria, Kempinski, Conrad, DoubleTree, Westin, Renaissance. Gloria Haitang Bay is usually the most affordable of those listed, from $125 per room. This opens up a practical format: have an examination or a course of treatment at the hospital in the morning and spend the evening on one of the island’s best beaches.

Pros and cons

Pros: state status and fixed prices — less risk of running into the unscrupulous markups typical of some private clinics in tourist zones; modern equipment at the level of large Western clinics; a convenient location in Haitang Bay, next to the beach hotels of international chains; you can combine treatment with a full beach holiday.

Cons: the branch is more compact than the head hospital in Beijing (49 departments versus 165) — for rare and especially complex diagnoses the range of specialists may be limited, and it makes sense to compare with the capabilities of the head hospital; a separate Russian-language program for foreigners is not officially declared, as in Beijing; for planned treatment prior appointment and arrangement are required — it is not a “walk in off the street and have an operation the same day” format.

How it differs from Sanya’s TCM sanatoriums

If for chronic conditions — back pain, skin problems, rehabilitation — it is more logical on Hainan to consider Sanya’s state traditional Chinese medicine hospital and thermal springs (covered in detail in the guide “Sanatorium and spa treatment on Hainan“), then Hospital 301 is rather about evidence-based Western medicine, comprehensive diagnostics and surgery at a state institution. These are not competing but complementary directions: the choice depends on the type of task, not on “what is better” in general.

How to get in touch and make an appointment

The branch does not declare a direct public Russian-language line — in practice booking goes either through the hotel where you are staying in Haitang Bay (the concierge services of the bay’s resort hotels regularly arrange transfers and appointments at the hospital for guests), or through Russian-language medical intermediary sites specializing in Hainan, or directly in English through the hospital’s administration.

What to clarify when making contact: whether the profile you need (a planned check-up, a specific operation, cosmetology) is available specifically at the Hainan branch and not only in Beijing; the price according to the official price list; whether a prior appointment is needed or you can apply on arrival.

How to pay

The hospital is a state institution with fixed prices; payment on the spot is in yuan, in cash or through Alipay/WeChat Pay with a UnionPay card. Russian Visa/Mastercard do not work directly. The hospital’s hotel costs about 588 ¥ per night — clarify whether it is included in the overall package or paid separately.

How to prepare

  • Gather the medical documentation for your case in advance and, if possible, translate it into English.
  • Clarify the make-up of the department and the availability of the specialist you need before the trip — the branch is more compact than the Beijing hospital.
  • Book the hospital’s hotel or one of the Haitang Bay hotels in advance, especially in high season.
  • Discuss the advisability of the trip with a doctor in Russia if it is about planned treatment or an operation.
  • Bring cash yuan or set up Alipay/WeChat Pay with a UnionPay card in advance.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to be treated at the Hainan branch than at the head hospital in Beijing? As a state institution, both hospitals work from an official price list, but the overall level of prices on the island for a number of medical tourism areas is lower than in the capital — check for the specific service.

Can I simply have a check-up during a vacation on Hainan? Yes, the hospital accepts this format of visit too — planned diagnostics can be combined with a beach holiday in Haitang Bay, but it is better to make the appointment in advance rather than count on being seen “off the street”.

Does the quality differ from the head hospital in Beijing? The branch was created as a modern unit of the same hospital with equipment of comparable level but fewer departments — for narrowly specialized and rare cases it is worth checking whether the profile you need is available here.

What is the easiest way to make an appointment if I’m already vacationing in Haitang Bay? Ask at the reception or the concierge of your hotel — the bay’s resort hotels regularly help guests with appointments and transfers to the hospital, it is the fastest channel on the spot.

What currency is needed to pay at the hospital? Cash yuan or Alipay/WeChat Pay with a UnionPay card — Russian cards are not accepted directly, as in the rest of China.

Prices and treatment conditions change — check the current information directly with the hospital before your trip.
