About this hotel

Baiyun Hotel Guangzhou stands on Huanshi East Road in Yuexiu District, just 50 metres from Taojin metro station, with the Martyrs' Cemetery and Guangzhou Zoo both close by.

This is an old state-run hotel with a nostalgic, old-Guangzhou atmosphere — breakfast is served on the 30th floor with sweeping views and a wide choice of dishes, the metro station and a bus stop sit right at the entrance, and the flower displays in the lobby are genuinely impressive.

Who it suits: travellers who enjoy the nostalgic feel of a state-era hotel, with breakfast on the top floor and the metro right at the door.

An honest note: the hotel shows its age for a property still marketed as five-star. Several serious reviews mention no proper shower cubicle (just a shower over an old-style tub), exposed wiring, and rooms sold as an "upgrade" without any real renovation behind it. It's worth asking about the room type and the date of the last refurbishment before booking.

Excellent location! Lots of restaurants and shops nearby, and it's very easy to get anywhere. The front desk and concierge staff are wonderful — attentive and helpful. Left this stay very satisfied! The flowers in the lobby are something else — always impressive!

The room was spacious, not cramped at all — two neat, comfortable beds with soft, pleasant bedding. I slept really well. Clean and hygienic, close to the old town with plenty of places to eat.

An old state-run hotel — staying here brings on a real sense of nostalgia. The metro station and a bus stop are right at the hotel entrance, very convenient for getting around. During my stay the room next door was being renovated, but thankfully it didn't disturb other guests much. One small suggestion: it might be worth putting rooms without a bathtub in a separate category to cut down on back-and-forth requests. I'm sure there are people like me who just don't like baths. Otherwise, the service and everything else was very professional. Overall, very good.

What they complained about

Awful. Nothing here deserves five stars. There are really only two room types: one is a shabby 1980s-style room, fine if you're not fussy; the other is a tiny budget-hotel-style room. Renovation work starts at 8:30 am and goes on until 9 pm. I put up with two days of gloom, but one morning the bathroom extractor fan suddenly started giving off such a terrible smell that my mother and I had to leave the hotel. How are they still operating like this? And how can they claim a five-star rating based on past reputation while representing Guangzhou? It's ridiculous. This hotel seems aimed purely at Indian guests. Tourists should avoid it! P.S. As soon as I noticed the smell I moved straight to another hotel, only about 100 yuan more, but the room size and service were completely different. Avoid this budget hotel!
