About the place

MahaNakhon SkyWalk is a viewing platform on the roof of the King Power MahaNakhon skyscraper in the Silom district. You rise to the roof in 50 seconds. The main attraction is a huge glazed “sky walkway” at a height of 310 metres above Bangkok. The panorama is impressive by day and by night.

King Power MahaNakhon (มหานคร) is a 314-metre skyscraper in Bangkok with a recognisable “pixelated” façade that seems to crumble in pieces. On the 74th floor there is an enclosed panoramic deck, above it an open terrace and the SkyWalk glass floor on the 78th floor, at a height of about 310 metres above Silom and Sathon. Here too is the Roof Top bar on the 76th floor, which is called the highest open-air bar in Bangkok. Entry is sold by time slot, so you need to plan in advance.

How to get there, hours and how to avoid queues

The tower stands by Chong Nonsi BTS station (the Silom line): from the platform a covered walkway leads down to the lifts, so you won’t get wet in the rain. By taxi tell Grab “King Power Mahanakhon”; the tower’s entrance is on Narathiwat Road. The platform works overall from 10:00 to 00:00, and a ticket is bought for a specific slot, so you won’t be able to walk in quickly without a reservation in the evening.

  • Which slot to choose. Sunset in Bangkok happens around 18:00 throughout the year. Come 45–60 minutes before it: you will catch daylight, the golden hour and the lights.
  • What you see. The Chao Phraya river, the towers of Silom, Lumphini Park and distant temples. On a clear day you can see very far; in the rainy season it is better to choose weekdays and evening slots.
  • The queue for the ascent. The lifts are fast, and the queue forms before the SkyWalk. Choose a ticket with an early slot and come 10 minutes early.
  • The Roof Top bar. Drinks are paid separately, and in the evening it is better to book tables.

How to spend the evening nearby

Nearby are Silom and Sathon with street food on Convent Road, and Lumphini Park is fifteen minutes away. A classic combination for the day: in the morning the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, at sunset Mahanakhon, and for dinner Silom or a Chao Phraya cruise.

What you will see from above

From the roof of King Power MahaNakhon a panorama opens over Silom and Sathon, the Chao Phraya river, Lumphini Park and the distant quarters of Sukhumvit. By day the bridges and districts are clearly visible, at sunset a golden illumination lights up over the city, and by night the whole picture turns into a sea of lights. It is one of the simplest ways to understand how Bangkok is laid out and where to go tomorrow.

If you don’t like heights, prefer the enclosed panoramic deck on the 74th floor: it gives the same view without glass underfoot. For those who want thrills, the SkyWalk is what you need: the glass floor underfoot seems even higher, and the light of sunset makes it more striking.

Limits and tips

  • Things in a locker. You may not take bags and foreign objects onto the glass platform; leave them before the ascent, and fasten your phone on a strap around your wrist.
  • Footwear. For the glass floor special covers are issued or you are asked to take off your shoes; stilettos won’t do, and dresses and skirts are awkward in the wind.
  • Photos. Selfie sticks and tripods are restricted, and drones are prohibited. A photographer works with digital pictures for a fee.
  • Weather. In a downpour and strong wind the open part may be closed; see the ticket rescheduling terms.
  • Children and fear of heights. The SkyWalk is a transparent floor underfoot at 310 metres, not comfortable for everyone; the enclosed platform on the 74th floor gives a panorama without glass underfoot.
