How to choose a tour

The Batur volcano (Gunung Batur, Kintamani) is an active stratovolcano about 1,717 metres high, 60 km from Ubud. Its sunrise is searched for with queries such as “Batur sunrise jeep”, “Batur trekking or jeep”, “Kintamani sunrise” and “Batur hot springs”. In this format you are picked up from your hotel in the middle of the night, driven in an off-road vehicle to a viewpoint, and you meet the sun over coffee and breakfast.

The schedule, tickets and how it all works

A typical day looks like this: a wake-up at 2:30, departure from the hotel at 3:00–4:00, a road of about 1–1.5 hours, and in jeeps you drive across black lava fields, at about 5:30 you take places on the slope, the sunrise comes right at 6 in the morning, then breakfast with a view of the caldera and Lake Batur. The whole tour takes about 5.7 hours, and the day combo adds hot springs, coffee plantations, a waterfall and rice terraces. A jeep, trekking or a cafe on the slope

• A jeep tour. Suits everyone: no climbing is needed, you move by car, and at the top there is a light walk.

• The Paperhills cafe and viewpoints. The cafe on the Kintamani slope lets you watch the sunrise in warmth without climbing. Places on the terrace are taken in advance.

What to bring and how to prepare

The evening before, go to bed no later than 21:00 and set an alarm for 2:30; at the hotel a driver with a sign will pick you up. Bring a flask of water, a thermos with something hot, a power bank and a head torch if you are walking. Keep your phone and camera in the pockets of your jacket: in the wind the battery drains quickly. Breakfast on the slope is usually simple: eggs, toast and a banana, so warn the organiser in advance if you have special dietary needs. If clouds cover the sunrise, you will be left with coffee and a view of the caldera and the lake, and the hot springs on the way will make up for the early start.

Restrictions and tips

• Warm clothing. At a height of 1,500+ metres it is cool and windy at sunrise: bring a jacket, a hat and gloves. After hot Ubud the difference is 10–15 degrees.
• Weather. In the dry season (April to October) it is more often clear, while from November to March clouds cover the volcano and the sunrise can come without views. Check the forecast and do not plan the sunrise for your last day.
• Departure. Go to bed early: the wake-up is at 2:30. Breakfast on the slope is usually included in the price.
• Drones. Banned without permission; a tripod is allowed.
• Passport. Not needed, but bring a copy for registration.
• Who it will not suit. Those with motion sickness on mountain roads and back problems: the road is uneven and the jeeps bounce.
