Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali, with dozens of places around it for a single day: the Tegalalang rice terraces, the sacred springs of Tirta Empul, the Tegenungan, Tibumana and Kanto Lampo waterfalls, and all of them fit into one trip with a driver. These tours are searched for with queries such as “Ubud day excursion”, “Tegalalang rice terraces”, “Tirta Empul” and “Gates of Heaven Lempuyang”.

How to choose a route

The more points, the longer the day: an 8.5-hour tour manages the terraces, a waterfall and a temple, while 12–15 hours adds Lempuyang, the Gates of Heaven, which are far to the east of the island. Private tours give flexibility: the driver stops where you want. Semi-private ones are cheaper, but the schedule is stricter. It is practical to start with the rice terraces at 7–8 in the morning, before the bus groups, then the temple with the spring, a waterfall by noon and the Ubud palace towards evening.

What is where and how to get there

  • Tegalalang. About 10 km north of central Ubud, 25–30 minutes. The light is best early in the morning; by 10 o’clock there are crowds and queues for the swings.
  • Tirta Empul. A spring temple in Tampaksiring, about 25 km, 40–60 minutes. Pilgrims and tourists purify themselves in pools with fountains.
  • Tegenungan, Tibumana, Kanto Lampo. Waterfalls in Gianyar, 20–40 minutes from Ubud. Tegenungan has many steps and people, while Tibumana and Kanto Lampo are quieter.
  • Lempuyang. About 2 hours from Ubud. The queue for a shot with the gates can reach several hours; details are in the article the Gates of Heaven, Lempuyang.
  • The Ubud palace and market. In the centre of town, ten minutes’ walk from Monkey Forest Road; the market opens from the morning.

Detailed guides: the Tegalalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces and the Sekumpul and Tegenungan waterfalls.
