A yuan Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card plus a brokerage account is a way to exchange rubles for yuan at the exchange rate instead of a 5–10% bank spread. The whole chain: tariffs, buying currency on the exchange, withdrawing to the card and the pitfalls.

All ways of getting money into China differ in one thing — the size of the loss. Cash at an exchange booth eats a 5–10% spread, a transfer to Alipay through a Russian bank up to 8%, intermediaries take 10–15%. There is a route where the losses are measured in tenths of a percent: buy yuan directly on the exchange through a broker and withdraw them to a yuan UnionPay card.

The scheme is most often assembled at Rosselkhozbank — it issues a UnionPay card in yuan and at the same time provides brokerage access to the exchange’s currency section. We go through the whole chain step by step: from opening a Rosselkhozbank brokerage account to paying in a Chinese shop.

Current as of October 2026. The issue of a yuan UnionPay card at Rosselkhozbank is priced in yuan — 380 ¥, not a fixed sum in rubles: in ruble terms the price floats with the exchange rate. The card is valid for 5 years. The whole chain takes 2–3 business days, and starting on the day of the flight is pointless. This is a practical guide, not investment advice; the bank changes its tariffs, so check the current ones on its website.

Buying yuan at Rosselkhozbank: briefly, two ways

At Rosselkhozbank you can buy yuan in two ways, and they are not interchangeable. The first is simply to come to a branch and buy cash yuan at the bank’s rate, as at any exchange booth: fast, but with a 5–10% spread. The second is to buy yuan at the exchange rate through a brokerage account and withdraw them non-cash to a yuan UnionPay card: an order of magnitude cheaper, but requires opening a brokerage account and waiting 2–3 business days. If you need a small sum in cash and fast — go to the teller. If the sum is noticeable or you fly to China regularly — below we go through the exchange scheme step by step.

Why this scheme

For the sake of the difference in money, and it is noticeable. Below is what different ways of getting yuan cost.

Method Losses Rate
Exchange + Rosselkhozbank broker tenths of a percent exchange
Cash yuan at a bank 5–10% spread the bank’s rate
A transfer to Alipay through a bank up to 8% on the spread + a fee the bank’s rate
Intermediaries, bots, channels 10–15% their own

On a trip budget of 100,000 ₽ the difference between the exchange rate and a 10% loss is about ten thousand rubles. It makes sense to spend an evening on the paperwork for that.

The second reason is the card itself. UnionPay is accepted almost everywhere in China, and it removes the problem of “what to pay with”, which is otherwise solved only with cash or through the apps of local payment systems.

The Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card: what it is and how much it costs

Rosselkhozbank issues debit UnionPay cards in several currencies, including yuan. For a trip to China you need specifically the yuan one — this is a key point, we return to it below.

What is important to know about the Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card in yuan:

  • The issue costs 380 ¥. The tariff is denominated in the card’s currency, so in rubles the sum depends on the rate on the day of application.
  • It is valid for 5 years. For a person who travels to China regularly, the one-off payment is spread over many trips.
  • Only the first ruble card is issued free. Currency cards, including the yuan one, carry a fee under the tariffs.
  • The card takes part in the bank’s loyalty program with cashback.
  • It works in China directly and links to local payment apps for QR-code payment.

You can order the Rosselkhozbank UnionPay at a branch or by an application on the bank’s website followed by a visit. You will need a passport; the card is personalized and takes a few days to make.

Why the card must be in yuan, not rubles

This is a mistake that wipes out all the savings, and it is made constantly.

If the card is in rubles, then when you pay in China the conversion happens at the bank’s rate — that is, with the very spread of several percent that the whole thing was meant to get rid of. You honestly bought currency on the exchange and then gave away the difference on conversion.

With a Rosselkhozbank card in yuan the chain is different: you convert rubles to yuan once, at the exchange rate, and then pay in yuan for goods priced in yuan. No second conversion happens at all.

So when applying, choose the account currency carefully. A Rosselkhozbank yuan card and a ruble UnionPay card are two different products with different economics.

How to open a Rosselkhozbank brokerage account

The second half of the scheme is brokerage access to the exchange. Without it you cannot buy currency at the exchange rate.

The account is opened right in the banking app: “More” → “Investments” → “Brokerage services”. The procedure takes minutes, and you do not have to go anywhere if you are already a customer of the bank.

You will also need a ruble account with the Faster Payments System (SBP) connected — through it you will fund the brokerage account.

About the Rosselkhozbank broker app: it is called “RSHB-Broker”, and in some of the bank’s materials the name “Svoi Investitsii” also appears — it is the same product. For Android the app is available in RuStore and Google Play; for iPhone owners the bank distributes a build separately, and its name changes periodically because of removals from the App Store. Besides the app, you can trade through the QUIK terminal or by phone.

There is no minimum threshold for topping up — you decide how much to deposit.

How to buy yuan on the exchange through Rosselkhozbank

Next is the purchase of yuan on the exchange itself. In the brokerage app: “Buy” → “Currency and precious metals” → the instrument with the yuan.

Key features to understand before the first trade:

  • A lot is 1,000 ¥. The minimum purchase is one lot, it cannot be split. That is, you cannot buy 300 yuan.
  • Only on trading days. On weekends and exchange holidays the currency section does not work and you will buy nothing. This is the main reason to build in a time reserve.
  • Settlement modes. Instruments differ in delivery time: with “tomorrow” settlement the currency arrives in the account on the next trading day, with “today” settlement on the same day, but the trading session for them ends earlier.

The practical conclusion: if you want to exchange rubles for yuan and manage to withdraw them to the card, start at least three business days before the flight. Friday evening is already too late.

Tariffs and the Rosselkhozbank broker’s fee

The total costs consist of two parts: the broker’s fee and the exchange’s fee. Both are measured in tenths and hundredths of a percent of the trade amount — an order of magnitude less than the bank spread.

The basic brokerage tariff has no subscription fee, the depository is not charged separately, and deposits and withdrawals of funds carry no fee. The commission rate depends on the tariff plan and turnover: the larger the volume, the lower the percentage.

Here is an honest caveat: the bank periodically reviews its tariff plans, and the specific rate depends on the tariff you choose. So do not go by figures from articles — open the brokerage tariffs section on the bank’s website and look at the current ones. It does not change the essence: even the upper limit of brokerage fees is incomparable with the 5–15% of alternative methods.

What is worth checking in the tariff before the first trade: the commission rate per trade on the currency market, the presence of a minimum fee per trade or per day, the account maintenance fee.

How to withdraw yuan to the card and top up the Rosselkhozbank yuan card

After settlement the purchased yuan sit in the brokerage account. To pay with them, they need to be moved to the card.

The order is as follows: in the brokerage app you create a withdrawal of funds, choose the currency — yuan — and specify your yuan account at the bank to which the UnionPay card is linked. The money arrives in the bank account, and the card is ready for use.

Two points that people stumble on.

The account currency must match. Yuan can be withdrawn only to a yuan account. If the account is in rubles, the withdrawal either will not go through or will go through with conversion at the bank’s rate — and the savings disappear.

The withdrawal is not instant. The request is processed during business hours, and crediting can take from several hours to the next business day. This is another reason not to leave it to the last moment.

Later you can top up the yuan card the same way: deposit rubles into the brokerage account, buy yuan, withdraw to the card.

The whole chain as a list

Step What you do How long it takes
1 Order a UnionPay card in yuan a few days to issue
2 Open a brokerage account in the bank’s app minutes
3 Deposit rubles into the brokerage account via SBP minutes to hours
4 Buy yuan on the exchange, in lots of 1,000 ¥ only on a trading day
5 Wait for the trade to settle until the next trading day
6 Withdraw the yuan to the yuan account with the card hours to a day

In total, from the start to a card ready for payment it is 2–3 business days if the card has already been issued, and about a week if you start from scratch.

What you will need: a checklist

Gather everything in advance so as not to find out halfway that something is missing.

What you need What for
Passport issuing the card and the brokerage account
A bank account the basis for the card and transfers
A ruble account with SBP funding the brokerage account
A yuan account the UnionPay card is linked to it
The banking app opening a brokerage account, transfers
The “RSHB-Broker” app buying currency on the exchange
A reserve of 2–3 business days the trading day, settlement, withdrawal

Separately check before starting: whether the card was issued specifically in yuan, not rubles, and whether the corresponding currency account has been opened. These are the two most common oversights because of which the scheme does not give the promised savings.

How to link a Rosselkhozbank card to Nihao China

It is hard to get by in China with a card alone: small outlets and the street have no terminals, and people pay there by QR code. So it is logical to link the card to Nihao China — an app of the UnionPay payment system itself, made for foreign tourists.

The linking order:

  1. Install the app from the App Store or Google Play — at home, before the flight, without fail.
  2. Register with a Russian phone number — specifically the one linked to the card at the bank. If the numbers do not match, the confirmation will not arrive.
  3. Link the card: Profile → Tour Wallet → Bank Card, then enter the UnionPay card details.
  4. Confirm the linking. 1 ¥ will be temporarily debited from the card — it is a verification payment and it is returned.
  5. Set a 6-digit PIN to confirm payments.

This must be done before the trip, and the reason is more serious than it seems: China has a traffic filtering system because of which downloading the app or receiving a confirmation SMS on the spot turns into a separate quest. More on this in the breakdown of internet in China.

An honest caveat: linking and payment do not work for everyone — this applies to any Russian UnionPay cards, not only Rosselkhozbank’s. So do not build the whole trip on Nihao China: keep cash in reserve and, if you can, a set-up wallet of a Chinese payment system. We covered this combination step by step separately, including topping up WeChat via Nihao and its limits: WeChat Pay and Nihao China.

Where the card works in China and where it does not

UnionPay is a Chinese payment system, and in China it works best. Terminals accept the card in shops, restaurants, hotels and on transport.

But there are nuances worth knowing in advance.

Small outlets and street food often have no terminal at all — people pay there by QR code through local payment apps or in cash. So it is logical to supplement the card with a link to a Chinese payment app and a small sum of cash.

ATMs. You can usually withdraw cash yuan with the card, but check the withdrawal fee in the tariffs — it can be noticeable.

Outside China UnionPay is accepted unevenly: widely in some Asian countries, almost nowhere in others. You should not count on it as a universal card for the whole trip.

Online payments do not go through everywhere — some international sites do not accept UnionPay cards.

How to withdraw yuan from the card back

The reverse task arises after the trip: yuan are left over and there is nowhere to spend them.

There are several options. You can leave it as it is — the card is valid for five years, and the currency will come in handy on the next trip. You can sell the yuan back on the exchange: move them from the card account to the brokerage account, sell at the exchange rate and withdraw rubles. The logic is the same as when buying, only in reverse — and the losses are again minimal. You can convert at the bank, but then you give away the spread that the whole thing was meant to get rid of.

Keep in mind that with the reverse operation you take on exchange rate risk: during the trip the rate could have changed in either direction. So selling the remainder immediately on return makes sense only if the sum is noticeable and you need the money in rubles — in other cases it is simpler to leave the yuan until the next trip and not pay again for conversion.

Pitfalls

The exchange does not always work. Weekends, holidays, technical pauses. The scheme does not work “on demand” — only on the trading schedule.

The minimum lot is 1,000 ¥. For a short trip this may be more than you need.

The rate changes. By buying yuan in advance you fix the rate — it may turn out better or worse than the future one.

The cost of the card does not pay back immediately. With an issue price of 380 ¥ the scheme starts to give a gain from a certain sum. For one short trip with a budget of a few tens of thousands of rubles the savings may not cover the cost of issue — calculate for your own case.

Tariffs change. Both the bank’s and the broker’s. Before applying, check the current ones on the bank’s website.

Apps for iPhone. Because of removals from the App Store, the way of installation and the build name change periodically — check the current option with the bank’s support.

Who this scheme is not for

An honest word on when not to bother.

If you go once and for a short time with a small budget — the issue of the card may not pay back, it is simpler to take cash.

If your flight is tomorrow — you physically will not make it: the card issue, the trading day, settlement, withdrawal.

If you are not a customer of the bank and are not ready to become one — you will have to open an account, go to a branch and deal with yet another app.

If you don’t want to get into exchange mechanics — settlement modes, lots and trading sessions require attention at least the first time.

In all these cases it is more sensible to take cash or use Chinese payment apps — we covered them separately: Alipay and WeChat for a foreigner and the comparison of all payment methods with real fees.

Can I pay Alipay and top up WeChat from a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card

A common question: since it is a UnionPay card, can it be linked to Alipay and used to pay like the Chinese do. In practice linking a Russian UnionPay to Alipay is described as unstable and should not be relied on. For WeChat there is a workaround through the Nihao China app, which the bank itself recommends, but it has its own limits and does not work for everyone. So it is better to treat the card as the basis for ATMs and terminals and to set up wallets separately: which methods exist and what they cost is covered in the articles paying Alipay from a Russian card and topping up and how to pay in China: a comparison of methods.

In brief: frequently asked questions

Is opening a Rosselkhozbank brokerage account paid? As with most Russian brokers, opening a brokerage account at Rosselkhozbank is, as a rule, free — the customer pays for the issue of the yuan UnionPay card (see the tariffs above) and the broker’s fee when buying currency. Check the exact current pricing on the bank’s website before visiting: brokers’ terms change periodically.

Can I buy yuan at Rosselkhozbank in cash? Yes, at a branch you can buy cash yuan by ordinary exchange — but at the bank’s rate with a spread, without access to the exchange rate. This is a separate operation from the scheme with a brokerage account and a UnionPay card described above: cash — straight into your hands, but more expensive; the exchange — cheaper, but only non-cash to the card.

Can I buy yuan at RSHB without a brokerage account? You can, but then at the bank’s rate with a spread. The exchange rate is available only through a broker.

Do I have to pay tax on buying currency? The purchase itself is not taxed. Tax consequences arise when you sell currency at a profit — it is better to check with a tax adviser, we do not give advice here.

Can I top up the yuan card directly from a ruble account? Technically yes, but then the conversion goes at the bank’s rate with a spread and the point of the scheme is lost. Top up with yuan bought on the exchange.

Does it have to be RSHB? No, yuan UnionPay cards are issued by other banks too, and brokerage access to the exchange is provided by any broker. The RSHB combination is chosen because the bank and the broker are one here — the withdrawal chain turns out shorter.

How many yuan should I take for a trip? It depends on the program, but remember the minimum lot of 1,000 ¥. The remainder does not disappear — the card is valid for five years.

What to do if the card was not accepted? Keep a backup: a little cash and a link to a Chinese payment app. Relying on a single payment method in a foreign country is a bad idea in general.

Can I convert rubles to yuan right in the banking app? You can, but it will be an ordinary bank conversion at the bank’s rate with a spread. The exchange rate is available only through a brokerage account — that is the point of the scheme.

What is better: buying yuan in advance or withdrawing cash in China? Withdrawing at an ATM carries a fee and goes at a rate you do not control. Buying on the exchange in advance is almost always better if the sum is noticeable.

How long does it take to open a brokerage account? The opening itself is minutes in the banking app. The delay comes from the card issue, the trading day and the settlement of the trade, not from setting up the account.

Is there a subscription fee for brokerage service? The basic tariff has none, nor a fee for the depository, deposits and withdrawals. But tariff plans differ — check the one you choose.

Does the card work on a trip from China to neighboring countries? Partly. UnionPay acceptance outside China is uneven, and you should not count on it alone.

Can I pay Alipay with a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card? Linking a Russian UnionPay to Alipay is described as unstable. It is more reliable to top up the balance another way or to use a foreign bank card.

Can I top up WeChat through this card? Through Nihao China it sometimes works, but there is a daily limit and the scheme does not work for everyone. Test it at home with a trial sum.
