UnionPay card, WeChat via Nihao China, a transfer to Alipay, cash and intermediaries. We compare the losses — from 0.355% to 15% — and choose a scheme for your timeframe and budget.
How should a tourist from Russia pay in China? The question sounds simple, and the answer depends on how much time you have before the flight and how much you are willing to lose on conversion. The spread is huge: from tenths of a percent on the exchange to noticeable tens of percent with intermediaries. Here all the methods are collected in one table: losses, preparation time, reliability and what you need to do before the trip.
The main principle is one: Russian cards do not work in China in the ordinary way, and Alipay and WeChat Pay will not link to them directly. So you need a “bundle”: a main tool plus a backup. About each of them below, with caveats where we found no confirmation.
- No Russian card links directly to Alipay or WeChat; a card from a foreign bank does link.
- A working base: a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card in yuan (accepted at many but not all points; the bank itself advises carrying cash) plus a reserve of cash yuan.
- Topping up Alipay and WeChat: by transfer, through a payment agent or Nihao China; all of this with costs and without guarantees.
- Visa-free entry for Russians for up to 30 days has been extended until 31.12.2027.
Comparing ways to pay in China
| Method | Losses | Preparation | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange + Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card | Tenths of a percent + the card fee | 2–3 business days + issue of the card | High, but not accepted everywhere |
| A foreign bank card in Alipay/WeChat | The rate and fees of the issuing bank | In advance | High |
| Cash yuan at a Russian bank | A spread noticeably above the exchange | About a day | High |
| A transfer to Alipay from a banking app | Exchange-rate spread + a possible fee | Up to several days | Medium: risk of compliance questions |
| A payment agent or bot | Usually higher than a bank | Fast | Medium, the market is gray |
| WeChat via Nihao China | No fee according to the service | Immediate | Low: does not work for everyone, there are limits |
What to pay with on the spot in China
| Tool | Where it is accepted |
|---|---|
| Alipay / WeChat Pay | Practically everywhere: markets, cafés, vending machines, transport |
| Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card | In many shops and ATMs, not all |
| Cash yuan | Legal tender, but refusals happen, and in a number of places cashless is more usual |
| Nihao China | Some points and transport, depends on the city |
About cashless taxis: paying through the app gives the meter price, but it is worth knowing in advance the taxi and QR code schemes.
How to pay in China from Russia: choosing by timeframe
You have two to three weeks
Get a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card in yuan and buy currency on the exchange. The issue of a currency card is priced in yuan, and its validity is five years. The point of the scheme is the difference in rate: on a noticeable sum it pays back the issue fee.
You have a foreign card
The calmest option: a Visa or Mastercard from a foreign bank links to Alipay directly, without transfers or top-ups. The conditions of issue for Russians depend on the bank, so check them with it.
The flight is in a few days
What remains is topping up Alipay by transfer or through an agent and cash yuan at a bank. Both options are more expensive, and both should be tested with a trial sum.
You didn’t manage anything
Bring cash dollars and exchange them on the spot. According to travelers’ accounts, at the Bank of China the exchange takes from half an hour, there is a per-transaction limit, and a passport is needed. Details are in the article on currency exchange in China.
What to pay for in advance from home
Bookings and everyday spending solve different tasks. Yuan are needed for food, the subway and the market, while trains, flights, accommodation and excursions can often be paid for in advance without touching wallets. How Russians pay for trains and hotels, what the fees and pitfalls are, see the article paying for trains, tickets and hotels for Russians. And train tickets within the country are covered in the piece on high-speed trains. The more you pay in advance, the fewer yuan you need on the spot.
Paying with Alipay and WeChat from a Russian card: what is realistic
Russian cards cannot be linked. Three paths really work: a transfer from a bank app (Sber, T-Bank, VTB, MTS are described most often), a payment agent and a foreign bank card. The first path must be checked with a trial payment: the function in banking apps changes, and there are no official confirmations. A step-by-step breakdown: how to top up Alipay and WeChat from Russia.
Nihao China: why it is not the foundation
The combination looks nice: a UnionPay card is linked to Nihao China, and it tops up WeChat. In practice there are limits on the amount and the number of attempts, and for some users the scheme does not work at all. So the logic is this: a UnionPay card and cash as the foundation, WeChat Pay as a bonus. Test the combination at home by loading a small sum. The setup is described in the article WeChat Pay and Nihao China.
How much is lost on 100,000 rubles: how to calculate it yourself
Rates change daily, so fixed percentages for each method would be an invention. Calculate it yourself in two minutes. Take today’s Central Bank yuan rate, multiply it by the amount in rubles and you get the “fair” number of yuan. Then compare it with how many yuan a bank, an agent or the exchange actually offers you. The difference in percent is your loss. For banks and agents it is usually more noticeable than for the exchange scheme, where only a small broker’s fee and the card issue fee are added to the rate. The larger the sum, the faster the advance preparation pays off; on a small sum it is easier to buy cash yuan.
Typical mistakes when paying in China
- One method for everything. If your phone dies and the card does not accept the payment, without a cash reserve you are left with nothing.
- The first payment already in China. Testing the Nihao China and wallet combination on the spot can end in a refusal with no explanation; test at home.
- A transfer on the day of the flight. Crediting can take from hours to several days.
- Everything on one card. If the bank suspends operations, access to the money disappears entirely.
- A name mismatch. In the wallet the name must match the passport, otherwise verification and transfers get stuck.
- Counterfeit banknotes and QR codes. For typical schemes read the piece scammers in China.
Payment apps: what Alipay and WeChat can do
Both wallets cover almost all everyday payments: food, shops, the subway, bike rental, small services. Alipay is usually more convenient for a foreigner: the interface is translated, and there are taxi hailing and transit services, which we wrote about in the article on taxis and the subway in China. WeChat is broader as a messenger and for mini-programs, but its payment part is harder for foreigners to set up. If you need to choose one, start with Alipay and add WeChat later. How the subway is paid for, see the piece on paying for the subway.
Cash: when it saves you
Banknotes are needed in three cases: a payment did not go through, you need to pay at a stall with no terminal, or your internet is not working. There is no point in taking cash for the whole trip, a reserve for a couple of days is enough. Some cash can also be obtained on the spot at an ATM with a UnionPay card, but the rate and fee there are set by the bank, and they differ. More on currency exchange and ATMs in the article currency exchange in China.
Payments by type of expense
| What we pay for | What is more convenient |
|---|---|
| Train and flight tickets | In advance from home, through a service with payment from Russia |
| Hotels | Book in advance; on the spot check the deposit terms |
| Food, cafés, market | Alipay or WeChat, cash as a reserve |
| Subway and bus | The app, a transit card or a ticket for cash |
| Souvenirs and shopping | A wallet or UnionPay card; don’t forget about what to buy in China |
What to set up before the flight
- Get the card, buy yuan, withdraw them to the card.
- Install Nihao China, link the card, set a PIN.
- Install WeChat and/or Alipay, complete passport verification.
- Make a test payment while you are still in Russia.
- Download offline maps and a translator: the list of apps is in the piece on apps.
- Estimate expenses: how much money to take to China.
Frequently asked questions
How do Russians pay in China in 2026?
With a bundle of a UnionPay card (for example Rosselkhozbank’s), cash yuan and, if possible, Alipay or WeChat Pay with a topped-up balance. Russian cards of other systems do not work in China.
Can I get by with a single UnionPay card?
It is risky. The card is not accepted everywhere, and the bank itself recommends keeping cash. Street food, small stalls and vending machines more often accept QR codes.
Does UnionPay from other Russian banks work?
Abroad, UnionPay cards are offered by Rosselkhozbank and the Asia-Pacific Bank; for the other banks we found no confirmation in our checks. Before the trip, check with the bank that the chosen card works specifically in China.
How do I pay in China with Alipay from a Russian card?
It cannot be linked. Top up the balance by transfer, through an agent, or use a foreign bank card. Step by step in the article how to top up Alipay.
How many cash yuan should I bring?
Expenses for two to three days plus a reserve. Buying cash for the whole trip is unprofitable because of the spread.
Can I pay in China in rubles or dollars?
Not in shops. Dollars are exchanged at banks, rubles are accepted by isolated exchange points, and the rate there is unfavorable.
Do I need a visa?
For trips of up to 30 days Russians do not need a visa: the visa-free regime has been extended until December 31, 2027. Details in the article visa for China.
Can I get a tax refund on purchases?
Yes, for a purchase of 200 ¥ or more in one store per day. More in the article on tax-free in China.
