How to set up WeChat Pay without a Chinese card, switch the interface to Russian and top up your wallet through Nihao China. Honestly about the 500 ¥ daily limit and why the scheme does not work for everyone.

WeChat in China is not a messenger but an operating system for daily life: chat, payment, the subway, taxis, bills. Setting up a wallet in it is not easy for a foreigner, but with the Nihao China app from UnionPay it has become feasible. We go through the setup step by step — and warn right away: for some people the scheme does not start at all, and it is not your fault.

Current as of July 8, 2026. Nihao China is an app of the UnionPay payment system for foreign tourists, launched in December 2025. Topping up WeChat through it: no more than 500 ¥ per day and no more than 4 times a day. According to reviews, the scheme does not work for everyone — allow for a backup option.

What Nihao China is and why you need it

Nihao China is a simplified app from UnionPay created specifically for foreigners. Its value is one thing: money is debited directly from your card, without intermediaries and extra fees.

The app can:

  • Scan — scan a seller’s QR code;
  • Pay — show your own QR code to the cashier;
  • pay for travel on the subway and buses;
  • top up a WeChat wallet.

A limitation: Nihao China is not accepted at all outlets. For complex operations you will still need Alipay or WeChat.

What you need before you start

A yuan Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card. How to get it and, at the same time, buy yuan at the exchange rate with a 0.355% fee — in detail in the article yuan at the exchange rate. Without the card there is nowhere to go from here.

Step 1. Setting up Nihao China

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Register with a Russian phone number — the very one linked to the card.
  3. Link the card: Profile → Tour Wallet → Bank Card.
  4. On activation 1 ¥ will be temporarily debited from the card — it is a verification payment and it will be returned.
  5. Set a 6-digit PIN to confirm payments.

Do all this at home, before the flight. In China the “Great Firewall” is in force, and confirmation SMS or downloading the app can turn into a quest.

Step 2. Switching WeChat to Russian

WeChat supports Russian in the mobile version. It is switched like this:

“Me” → Settings → General → Language — change “Auto” to “Russian”.

Important: the desktop and web versions of WeChat have no Russian, and some functions are cut down there. Go by the phone.

Step 3. Activating WeChat Pay

The path in the app: “Me” → “Services” → “Wallet”. Passport verification is required — you fill in the details and upload a photo.

Verification takes time and sometimes requires resubmission. Another reason to do it in advance.

Step 4. Topping up WeChat through Nihao China

The mechanics are simple: in WeChat you request a top-up and receive a QR code, which you scan in Nihao China. Money is debited from the UnionPay card and goes into the WeChat wallet.

Hard limits:

  • A maximum of 500 ¥ per day.
  • No more than 4 top-up attempts per day.

Honestly: the scheme does not work for everyone

This is the main thing you need to know before you build a trip around it. The authors who described the combination report that top-ups work selectively. One of them managed to load only 200 ¥ of the allowed 500, after which he got refusals with no clear reason.

The reasons for refusals are opaque: the issuing bank, UnionPay’s anti-fraud, the verification status in WeChat. It cannot be predicted in advance.

The practical conclusion:

  • Test the combination at home, before the flight — load a trial 100 ¥.
  • Don’t count on WeChat as your only wallet.
  • The basis of the trip is the UnionPay card itself (it is accepted at 80–90% of points) plus a small reserve of cash yuan.
  • Treat WeChat Pay as a pleasant bonus, not a foundation.

How to pay in China with WeChat

  • Show a QR: wallet → “Money” → the cashier scans your code. This is how you pay in supermarkets and chain outlets.
  • Scan a QR: “Scan” → point at the seller’s code → enter the amount. This is how you pay at markets and small cafés.
  • Transfers to people: in a chat with a person — the “+” icon → “Transfer”. Convenient when a local pays for you and you pay them back.

Separately about taxis: cashless payment gives the standard meter price, while for cash they often ask for more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I link a Russian card directly to WeChat Pay?

No. Neither Mir, nor Visa/Mastercard from Russian banks, nor a Russian-issued UnionPay is accepted by WeChat and Alipay for payment. Nihao China is a workaround: the card is linked to it, and it in turn tops up WeChat.

How do I link a card to Nihao China?

Through Profile → Tour Wallet → Bank Card in the Nihao China app itself — enter the details of the yuan UnionPay card, and on activation a verification 1 ¥ is debited and returned. The detailed order is in Step 1 above.

How do I top up WeChat with yuan through Nihao China?

In WeChat request a wallet top-up — the app will show a QR code. Scan this code in Nihao China, the money is debited from the linked UnionPay card and goes into the WeChat wallet. The limit is 500 ¥ per day, no more than 4 attempts a day. The order is in Step 4 above.

Nihao China or Alipay — which to install?

Install both. Nihao China is cheaper (no intermediaries), Alipay is more universal and better localized. If one fails, the other will help out.

Do I need cash if everything is set up?

Yes, a small reserve. Cash yuan are accepted about where the UnionPay card is, at 80–90% of points. They will help out with a dead phone, in a temple and with an elderly taxi driver.

How many yuan should I load into WeChat?

With a limit of 500 ¥ a day you cannot accumulate a large sum. Keep pocket money in WeChat for food, transport and small things, and pay for large purchases by card.
