Alipay can be topped up by a transfer to a phone number from Sber, VTB, T-Bank and MTS. We go through it step by step, calculate the real overpayment of up to 8% and warn about the risk of the account being blocked.
You cannot pay Alipay with a Russian card head-on: neither Mir, nor Visa and Mastercard from Russian banks, nor a Russian UnionPay can be linked to the app. But the task has a workaround, and it consists of two steps. First you put money on the wallet balance, then you pay from it, as the Chinese themselves do. The only question is how to put money into Alipay or WeChat from Russia and how much you will lose along the way.
Below we go through all the working options: a transfer from a banking app, payment agents, a foreign card and the exchange scheme through a UnionPay card. To each we added an honest caveat: what is confirmed by users’ descriptions and what banks do not promise. The bet in this topic is not on pretty figures but on making sure you don’t end up with an empty wallet on the day of the flight.
- A Russian card cannot be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay. The balance can be topped up.
- Top-up methods: a transfer from a banking app (T-Bank, Sber, VTB, MTS are described most often), a payment agent, a transfer from an acquaintance with a Chinese wallet.
- Typical losses: several percent on the rate plus a fee; higher with intermediaries. The specific figures change every month, check against the bank’s screen before confirming.
- The cheapest route if you have time: yuan on the exchange and a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card.
- The most convenient: a foreign bank card linked directly to Alipay.
Can you pay Alipay with a Russian card
The short answer: not directly. Alipay accepts cards of international systems issued outside Russia, and Mir is not on the list at all. Russian Visa and Mastercard do not work abroad after the banks were cut off from international settlements, and linking ends in an error. So the right way to put the question is different: not “how to link a card” but “how to top up the wallet”.
| What you need to do | Possible from Russia? |
|---|---|
| Link a Mir card to Alipay or WeChat | No |
| Link a Russian Visa/Mastercard | No |
| Link a Russian UnionPay | Unstable, it cannot be relied on |
| Link a card from a foreign bank | Yes |
| Top up the balance by transfer or through an agent | Yes, with costs and caveats |
How to top up Alipay through Sberbank or T-Bank
This is the most frequent request, and one must be careful here. In users’ and guides’ descriptions from 2026 two different schemes occur, and they are often confused.
Scheme 1. A transfer to a phone number in the bank’s app
According to the descriptions, such a function exists in T-Bank, Sber, VTB and “Moy MTS”. Users describe the path in the T-Bank app like this: “Payments” → “Transfer by phone” → your number → “Another bank” → “Banks of other countries” → Alipay → first and last name in transliteration. Two conditions are needed:
- the phone number is linked to your Alipay account;
- the first and last name match the passport and the verification in Alipay.
The money, according to the same descriptions, takes from a few hours to three days. An important caveat: we found no official confirmation from the banks, some materials online claim there is no such button in Russian apps at all, while others write that it works for some customers and disappears for others. So start with a trial transfer of a small sum and do not leave the top-up for the day of the flight.
Scheme 2. Payment in rubles, the service credits the yuan
The second option looks like “a top-up through Sberbank or Tinkoff” but in essence is not. You pay rubles through SBP or by card on the service’s website or in its bot, and the service itself sends the yuan to your wallet. The bank here is simply the source of rubles. This is convenient and usually fast, but you entrust the money to an intermediary, and its fee is built into the rate.
Through a QR code in the Sber app
Users describe this trick too: in Alipay open money receiving (the Pay/Receive → Receive section), save the QR code and scan it in the Sberbank app, specifying the amount in yuan. The mechanics are the same as with a transfer by phone, only the way of specifying the recipient changes. How well it works depends on the app version and your status at the bank.
How to top up WeChat: transfer and top-up
With WeChat the story is more complicated. A direct bank transfer “to WeChat” from Russia is described in ordinary guides less often than for Alipay. The paths named more often are these:
- A payment agent. You pay rubles, the agent credits yuan to the WeChat wallet. Some agents have a minimum amount, for one of them it is declared as the equivalent of $500, and the crediting time is from a couple of hours to a day. This is the services’ own data, check before paying.
- A transfer from an acquaintance. Inside WeChat money is transferred between wallets, so a friend in China or a fellow traveler with a Chinese wallet can send you yuan, and you pay them back in rubles.
- Nihao China. An app to which a UnionPay card is linked and from which you can top up WeChat. The limits are strict, the scheme does not work for everyone. The setup is described in the article on WeChat Pay and Nihao China.
If what you need is to transfer money to another person in WeChat, it is done inside the app between wallets, but for that you must already have yuan on your balance. So everything comes down to the first step: fill the wallet first.
How much the top-up costs
The main losses come not from fees but from the exchange-rate spread: the bank or service converts rubles to yuan at its own rate. Guides name for bank transfers a spread of roughly 3 to 8% against the market, more for intermediaries. No one has exact figures for today: the rate and tariff change, and private reports diverge. So compare like this: how many rubles will be debited and how many yuan will arrive, divide one by the other and compare with the Central Bank rate on the same day.
| Method | Losses (guideline) | Speed | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| A transfer from a banking app | Several percent on the rate plus a fee | From hours to three days | The bank’s compliance questions, the function may be unavailable |
| A payment agent or bot | Usually higher than a bank | Often fast | A gray market, a proven service is needed |
| Exchange + Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card | Tenths of a percent + the card issue fee | 2–3 business days | Preparation in advance is needed |
| A foreign bank card in Alipay | The issuing bank’s rate and fees | In advance | The card itself is needed |
A foreign card: the most convenient option
A foreign bank’s Visa or Mastercard can be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay. The conditions for issuing such cards to Russians depend on the bank and country and change, so check them with the bank itself. To register in Alipay you need a passport, identity confirmation with face recognition and a phone number to which codes arrive. With this scheme money is debited from the card at each payment, and no wallet balance is needed. For one-off payments of a small sum the Alipay fee, according to guides, may be absent, and for large payments a percentage applies, so see the conditions in the app.
The risk of blocking: what is kept quiet
A transfer to a foreign payment service attracts the attention of bank compliance under Law 115-FZ. There are descriptions of cases where a bank suspended operations right after the first such transfer. What to do about it:
- keep tickets and a booking at hand to confirm the trip;
- do not send large sums in one payment;
- do not use a single card on which all the money lies;
- take a backup way to pay: a little cash yuan and a Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card.
What to choose: scenarios
- Two to three weeks before the trip. A Rosselkhozbank UnionPay card and buying yuan on the exchange. In detail in the separate guide.
- You have a foreign card. Link it to Alipay directly and don’t think about top-ups.
- The flight is in a few days. A trial transfer from a banking app or a proven payment agent, plus cash yuan as insurance.
- You didn’t manage anything. Take cash dollars and exchange on the spot, as described in the article on currency exchange in China.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pay Alipay with a Russian card?
Direct linking of a Russian card is impossible. The working scheme is this: top up the Alipay balance by transfer or through an agent, and then pay from the balance by QR code. The alternative: a foreign bank card, which Alipay accepts.
How do I top up Alipay through Sberbank?
Users describe two paths: a transfer to the phone number linked to Alipay and a transfer via the payment-receiving QR code. The bank does not officially guarantee this, the function may be unavailable, so first make a trial transfer of a small sum.
How do I top up Alipay through Tinkoff (T-Bank) in yuan?
In the descriptions the path is: “Payments” → “Transfer by phone” → your number → “Another bank” → “Banks of other countries” → Alipay. The first and last name are entered in transliteration, as in the passport. The rate is determined by the bank, and it must be checked before confirming.
How do I put money into WeChat from Russia?
A direct bank transfer for WeChat is rarely described. More often people use a payment agent, a transfer from an acquaintance with a Chinese wallet, or Nihao China with a UnionPay card, which has limits and failures. Start with a small sum.
How do I make a WeChat money transfer?
Inside WeChat a transfer is made between wallets: open a chat with the person, tap “+” → “Transfer” and enter the amount. For this the wallet must be topped up and verified, and foreigners are subject to limits on amounts.
Can I pay for purchases in Alipay directly with a Russian card?
No. Mir, Visa and Mastercard from Russian banks and a Russian UnionPay do not pass verification. You can pay from the wallet balance or with a foreign bank card.
Why didn’t the transfer arrive?
Three typical reasons: the phone number is not linked to Alipay, the name did not match the passport, the bank stopped the operation. Check everything before sending and keep the transfer receipt.
Alipay or WeChat: which does a tourist need more?
Alipay is friendlier to foreigners and convenient in transport, for example in taxis and the subway. WeChat is needed for communication and local services. It is optimal to set up both but to pay with the main one.
Is cash needed in China?
Yes, a small reserve. It will help out with a dead phone or a wallet failure. About paying for the metro and small expenses, read the breakdown of paying for the metro in China.
