The best months for a trip around China and which dates to avoid because of the crowds.

“When is the best time to go to China?” is a question with no single answer, because China is not one country in terms of climate but several. In December it is minus thirty in Harbin, while on Hainan you can swim; in July it is hot and pouring in Beijing, while in Tibet and the north of Xinjiang it is exactly the season. The universal rule goes like this: on the mainland the best time is spring and autumn, on tropical Hainan — winter. Then come the details: what to choose for the sea, where to go in spring and in December, how to avoid the “golden weeks” and which months are cheaper.

In brief. The season in China, current as of October 2026.

  • Universal: April–May and September–October — comfortable in most regions.
  • At the sea: Hainan (Sanya) — November to March; on the mainland beaches (Qingdao, Xiamen, Shenzhen) — summer, but there is a risk in typhoon season.
  • Winter: the north — snow and the ice festival in Harbin; the south — mild; the southwest — sunny and dry.
  • Summer: hot and humid, peak rainfall in the south; but it is the season for Tibet, Qinghai and the north of Xinjiang.
  • Avoid: October 1–7 (Golden Week) and Chinese New Year — transport and hotels are overloaded.

When to go to China: by month

Month Where it is good What to beware of
January–February Hainan, the south (Guangzhou, Yunnan), snowy Harbin; Chinese New Year — bright, but expensive and crowded Frost in the north, overloaded transport at New Year
March The south and southwest, rapeseed blossoms, the start of the season in Guilin Still cool in Beijing; dampness in the south
April–May Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu; peony blossoms in Luoyang; overall the best time May holidays (May 1–5) — an influx of tourists; dust storms happen in Beijing
June The north, the highlands, Tibet Rainy season in the south and the Yangtze valley
July–August Tibet, Qinghai, Xinjiang, mountain areas; mainland beaches Heat and humidity, typhoons in the southeast, crowds during the summer holidays
September Almost all of China; comfortable by the end of the month Typhoons on the coast at the start of the month
October Autumn colors in Beijing, Sichuan, the mountains; dry and clear October 1–7 — Golden Week
November The south, Hainan, calm Beijing; fewer tourists It gets colder in the north
December Hainan, the south, Yunnan; skiing and ice in the north Smog in the north, cold

When to go to China for the sea

“When to go to China for the sea” is really a question about Hainan. It is the country’s only tropical island, and the beach season there lasts exactly in the months when it is cold or rainy on the mainland — roughly November to March. Month by month in detail: Hainan in November, Hainan in December, and for air and sea temperatures see the piece weather in Sanya by month.

There are mainland beaches too: Qingdao and Dalian in the north, Xiamen and Shenzhen in the southeast. There the season is summer (July–August), the water is warmer, but there are many Chinese tourists, and in the south there is the added risk of typhoons. An overview of the destinations is in the article beach vacations in China. For the question “where in China can you swim in autumn” (October–November) the answer is almost always the same — Sanya.

Destination Best time for the beach What to keep in mind
Sanya (Hainan) November–March Summer is typhoon season, peaking July–September
Xiamen, Shenzhen June–September (allowing for typhoons) No “tropical” winter
Qingdao, Dalian July–August The water is cooler; the beaches are crowded

China in spring: where to go

Spring (March–May) is one of the best seasons. Where to go in China in spring:

Remember the May holidays: at the start of May the whole country goes on vacation, tickets and hotels get more expensive, and the sights are packed.

Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an by season

If your first route is the three main cities, it is useful to know how each of them behaves:

  • Beijing. Spring is warm, but dust storms and poplar fluff are possible; summer is hot, with short heavy downpours; autumn is the best season (clear sky, golden leaves in the parks); winter is dry and cold, but there are fewer tourists and hotels are cheaper. Go to the Great Wall early in the morning and on weekdays: details and myths are in the article The Great Wall of China: myths and facts.
  • Shanghai. Spring and autumn are comfortable; June is the rainy period, July–August is stuffy and humid; in winter it is damp and cool, but without severe frosts.
  • Xi’an. Spring and autumn are best; summer is hot, winter cold and sometimes smoggy. The Terracotta Army — the guide to Xi’an — does not depend on the season, but early in the morning it is easier to avoid groups.

Blossoms and events by season

Time What to see
January–February The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival
March Rapeseed blossoms in the southern provinces, the start of spring in the southwest
April Peony blossoms in Luoyang, cherry and magnolia blossoms in the parks
May–June The high mountain roads of Tibet and Sichuan open; the Dragon Boat Festival
July–August Summer night markets, mountain lakes and steppes
September–October Golden autumn, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Golden Week
November–December The warm south, Hainan, light festivals

How to travel during the holidays if you have no other choice

If your vacation coincides with Chinese holidays, act in advance: buy tickets and book hotels as early as possible, keep a time reserve (trains and roads are overcrowded), plan to see famous places in the first hours of opening and choose less popular destinations. Booking attractions by passport closes quickly during holidays, and tickets to many places are snapped up in the first days of sale. Plan fallback options too: for example regional cities instead of the capital.

China in autumn: the golden season

September–October is the second peak. The sky is clear, there is no summer stuffiness, and in the mountains there are autumn colors: Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Sichuan and Jiuzhaigou. Guides: Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. But October 1–7 is the national week: hundreds of millions of people travel in these days, and it is better to go before or after. What to do in November is in the article China in November.

China in December: where to go

December is a month of contrasts, so the choice depends on the goal:

  • Beach: Hainan — warm, dry, swimming season.
  • Snow and ice: Harbin and the northeast — cold, but beautiful; the ice and snow festival unfolds closer to January: the Harbin festival.
  • The warm mainland: Guangzhou, Yunnan, southern Guangxi.
  • Cities: Beijing and Shanghai are cool, with fewer tourists, but smog is possible.

A detailed selection is in the article China in winter and December: where to go.

Climate by region: a quick cheat sheet

Region Best time Features
North (Beijing, Harbin, Datong) April–May, September–October Cold dry winter, hot humid summer
East (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou) April, October–November Rainy June, stuffy summer, typhoons in late summer
Center and west (Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing) April–May, September–October Hot summer, foggy winter
South (Guangzhou, Guilin) October–December Humid summer, mild winter
Southwest (Yunnan) March–May, October–November Rainy season in summer, sunny dry winter
Tibet and the highlands May–October Altitude and night frosts even in summer
Hainan November–March Typhoons in summer

How to choose a month for your goal

  • Your first time in China: April–May or late September–October (except October 1–7), the Beijing — Xi’an — Shanghai route.
  • A beach vacation: November–March, Hainan.
  • Nature and mountains: September–October — colors, visibility and dry weather.
  • Photos and atmosphere: winter — Harbin, spring — blossoms, autumn — golden leaves.
  • With children: it is better to avoid peak heat and the rainy season; April–May and October are convenient.
  • A budget vacation: the shoulder season and weekdays outside holidays.

Summer and winter: what to expect

  • June–August: hot and humid, rain and a risk of typhoons in the south; but it is the season for the mountains and Tibet. On Tibet — permits, route, altitude.
  • December–February: frosty in the north with occasional smog, milder in the south. Fewer tourists, and many prices are lower.

Hainan is the exception: its season is in winter

The general rule “spring and autumn are better” does not apply to Hainan. It is China’s only tropical island, south of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, and the beach season there lasts exactly in the months when it is cold or rainy on the mainland — roughly November to March. In summer it is warm on Hainan too, but the typhoon season is added (peaking July–September).

If you are going specifically for the beach, go by Hainan’s calendar separately from the rest of China, not by the general “spring/autumn” rule. The overall picture of the island is in the article Hainan: the island people go to for the sea in winter.

Avoid the “golden weeks”

During October 1–7 (National Day of the PRC) and Chinese New Year (late January – February) the whole country travels: prices are higher and the queues at attractions are huge. There are also shorter holidays: Qingming (early April), the May weekend, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. The exact holiday schedule is usually published by the PRC government in the autumn of the previous year — check the announcement. A calendar for the coming year is in the article China 2027: the main events of the year.

An unusual fact: the largest human migration on Earth

Before Chinese New Year Chunyun begins — the season of mass trips home: over about 40 days the Chinese make billions of journeys. Train tickets sell out within weeks, and stations are packed. Traveling on these dates to see the country is a bad idea, but seeing the holiday itself is unforgettable: the guide is Chinese New Year 2027.

When it is cheaper to go

The most affordable months for hotel and ticket prices are November (outside holidays), January before the start of the New Year week, and early December. At the sea (Hainan) the most expensive weeks are the New Year holidays and the February vacation. A budget calculation is in the article how much a trip to China costs.
